Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Roberts.
Hi Tracy, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I opened my business in 2024 with a clear vision: to create a place where scalp and hair care could be combined with genuine relaxation and an elevated, personalized experience. At the time, headspas were still relatively unfamiliar in our area, so much of the beginning involved educating people about what a headspa was and why scalp health deserved the same attention as skincare.
I chose to begin in a salon-suite setting, which allowed me to keep my overhead manageable and focus my resources on the quality of the experience. During my first six months, I consistently invested in Instagram advertising to introduce the concept to the community. I also chose not to accept tips during my first year and instead encouraged guests to leave honest Google reviews. Those reviews, referrals, and returning clients became an important part of our growth.
Since opening, we have performed more than 2,000 headspa services, grown into a six-figure business, expanded into two suites, and built a team that allows us to offer headspa treatments, facials, dermaplaning, LED therapy, and other personalized services. What began as Elevate Headspa has also evolved into Elvaya Headspa®, a brand that represents both where we started and where we are going.
Today, my focus is not only on creating a memorable experience for every guest, but also on continuing to educate people about scalp and hair health. Building this business has required adaptability, consistency, and a willingness to keep learning, but seeing our guests return, refer their friends, and trust us with their care has made every challenge worthwhile.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a completely smooth road. Because headspas were still a fairly new concept in our area when I opened, one of my first challenges was educating the community about what the experience involved and building trust in a service many people had never tried before. As the business grew, I also had to learn how to transition from doing everything myself to managing employees, expanding our services, and making decisions that supported long-term growth.
One of the most difficult challenges was being placed in a position where a public-facing rebrand became necessary. After confusion began developing in local online advertising, there was a risk that people searching for my business could be directed elsewhere or unknowingly book with a different business. Protecting my clients and giving them a clear, reliable way to find us had to come first. For that reason, the business began operating publicly as Elvaya Headspa®. This was a reactive decision made to protect the identity, reputation, and client relationships I had already worked hard to establish, not simply a change I decided to make.
Rebranding an established business affected everything from our website and advertising to signage, printed materials, and how clients found us online. Although it was overwhelming, I refused to allow the situation to erase what we had built. I used it as an opportunity to strengthen our identity, and Elvaya Headspa® is now a federally registered trademark.
Like many small-business owners, I have also experienced slower seasons, financial pressure, and the constant challenge of balancing growth with protecting the quality of the client experience. Each obstacle has taught me to be resourceful, adaptable, and willing to advocate for both my clients and my business. The road has not always been easy, but it has made me more confident in what I have created and more intentional about where the brand is going next.
As you know, we’re big fans of Elevate Headspa. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Elvaya Headspa® is a specialized headspa and skincare studio in Charlottesville, Virginia. We are known for combining personalized scalp and hair care with deep relaxation, giving guests an experience that feels both restorative and educational. Our offerings include customized headspa treatments, scalp analysis, conditioning and detox treatments, facials, dermaplaning, LED therapy, and combination experiences for both women and men.
What sets Elvaya apart is that we do not approach our services as one-size-fits-all. We take time to understand each guest’s scalp, hair, lifestyle, and concerns before selecting the products and techniques used during the appointment. We also believe strongly in honest education. Our goal is never to make unrealistic promises, but to help guests better understand their scalp and hair, recognize when something may require a medical professional, and make more informed choices about their care at home.
The experience itself is equally important. From our private setting and personalized consultations to the products, techniques, and sensory details, everything is intentional. We want every guest to feel fully cared for rather than as though they are simply moving through another salon appointment. It is not just another service, it is an experience.
I am most proud that Elvaya has grown from one idea into a business with a talented team, and more than 2,000 headspa services performed. Even more meaningful is the trust we have built within our community through returning guests, referrals, and honest reviews. Elvaya Headspa® is now a federally registered brand, and we are continuing to grow while remaining committed to the personalized care and quality that built our reputation.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next five to ten years, I believe scalp care will become as familiar and routine as skincare. Headspas may still feel new to many people today, but consumers are becoming increasingly interested in scalp health, hair-loss education, stress reduction, and services that support their overall well-being. I do not see the headspa industry as a passing trend; I see it developing into a recognized part of the beauty and wellness space.
I also expect the industry to become more personalized and education focused. Technology such as scalp-analysis cameras will help professionals better identify visible concerns and track changes, while clients will become more aware that their hair and scalp can be influenced by nutrition, hormones, stress, illness, medications, styling habits, and product use. That awareness should lead to more honest conversations and less reliance on viral products, unnecessary supplements, and unrealistic “miracle growth” claims.
As the industry expands, proper training, licensing, sanitation, and scope of practice will become even more important. Headspa professionals should understand both what we can address cosmetically and when a client needs to be referred to a dermatologist or another healthcare professional. I hope the future includes greater collaboration between beauty, wellness, and medical professionals while still preserving the deeply relaxing experience that makes a headspa so special.
I also see headspa-inspired wellness moving beyond the treatment room and into workplaces, events, and other settings where people need intentional moments to slow down. Ultimately, I believe the businesses that last will be those that combine relaxation with integrity, education, personalization, and genuine care.
