Life & Work with Alexandra Gravely of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Gravely.

Hi Alexandra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always loved art and have been a creative person for as long as I can remember. In high school, I started selling pet portraits, which was my first real experience making money from my art. At the time, though, I never really thought of art as something I could turn into a career.

I went to college to study graphic design, and shortly after, I discovered live wedding painting on social media. I was immediately drawn to the idea of combining art with such a meaningful and memorable part of someone’s life. I fell in love with the process and decided to pursue it for myself.

I’ve now been painting live at weddings for three years, capturing couples and their wedding days on canvas as they unfold. Alongside live wedding painting, I also take on studio commissions, including portraits and other meaningful pieces. It’s been really special to turn something I’ve loved since childhood into a career and to create artwork that holds so much personal meaning for the people who commission it.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest struggles has been learning to see art as a real career and to have confidence in myself as a business owner and artist. For a long time, I never imagined that I could actually make a living doing something I loved, so taking that leap was intimidating.

There’s also been a lot of learning along the way, figuring out how to market myself, price my work, manage the business side of things, and put myself out there. Live wedding painting comes with its own challenges too. Every wedding is different, and I have to be able to create something meaningful while working within a timeline and adapting to whatever the day brings.

I’ve definitely had moments of doubt, but each challenge has pushed me to grow both creatively and personally. Looking back, I think those difficult parts have been just as important to my journey as the successes.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in live wedding painting, capturing a couple’s wedding day in real time and creating a one-of-a-kind piece of art they can cherish for years to come. I also take on studio commissions, including pet portraits and other custom pieces.

What I love most about live painting is that every wedding is completely unique. I’m not just recreating a photograph, I’m capturing the atmosphere, details, and emotions of the day to create a painting that feels personal to each couple.

I’m most proud of being able to turn something I’ve loved since childhood into a career and create meaningful artwork that people can keep and pass down for generations.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something that might surprise people is that I’m actually pretty introverted and naturally quiet. Live wedding painting puts me in the middle of a lot of people and social situations, which is very different from the quiet studio environment I’m used to. It’s pushed me outside of my comfort zone in a lot of ways, and I’ve grown so much as a person because of it.
