Today we’d like to introduce you to Genesis Dudley.
Hi Genesis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m originally from the Bronx, New York, born and raised. Growing up, I always had a creative side and a love for expressing myself, but my path to becoming the woman I am today definitely wasn’t a straight one.
Life has taken me through different seasons, some that challenged me, some that changed me, and some that forced me to discover a strength in myself I didn’t always know I had. I grew up in church, with a mother who was also a pastor, but I was far from perfect. In a lot of ways, I was the opposite of what the people around me—including my own mother—believed a Christian was supposed to look like. Eventually, I found myself rejected by my own mother for being an imperfect daughter and not becoming who I was expected to be.
Things at home reached a point where I was being denied food, water, and access to the outside world. One day, I decided that if I was going to die, I would rather die in the streets than at the hands of my own family in a place I used to call home. So, in May 2023, I ran—with only the clothes on my back and no shoes on my feet.
But then the entire day passed. I was out in the streets, and somehow, I was still alive. I had left that house believing I was going somewhere to die, but when I realized I hadn’t, something in me changed. I decided to live instead.
That decision became the beginning of an entirely different life. I spent time in a few shelters, eventually met the man who would become my husband, and started building a life from scratch. I know I could not have survived everything I did without God. And while my experiences with my family and the church could have made me walk away from Him, they did the opposite. I learned God for myself and discovered that He was so much more than what people had made Him out to be.
Somewhere along that journey, I legally changed my name to Genesis, which to me represented new beginnings and God’s promises. When God gives you a new life, He gives you a new name—figuratively. But I decided to take the quite literal route, and Genesis became my new name.
And somewhere in the process of learning who God was outside of other people’s expectations, I started learning who I was outside of them, too.
Eventually, my journey brought me to Virginia, where I began building a new chapter of my life and, little by little, giving myself permission to seriously pursue the things I had always wanted for myself.
Modeling became a huge part of that. What started as something I loved grew into something I became intentional about building. I’ve had the opportunity to work on commercial projects, be published in magazines, step onto acting sets, and continue developing my portfolio in commercial, lifestyle, beauty, editorial, and runway.
One of the things I love most about modeling and acting is the opportunity to help tell stories and bring someone’s vision to life. There’s something special about working alongside other creatives—photographers, designers, stylists, makeup artists, directors, actors, and everyone else who brings their own piece of creativity to a project. I love seeing an idea that started in someone’s mind become something tangible and knowing that I got to play a part in making it happen. Virginia has introduced me to so many talented creatives, and being able to create, collaborate, and grow within that community has become one of my favorite parts of this journey.
Being a survivor doesn’t mean I walked away untouched. I now live with severe PTSD as a result of what I experienced, and healing has become its own journey. Every part of what happened, I still carry with me. But it cannot decide what I do with the life I fought to keep.
I’m still building, still learning, and still stepping into new rooms. My ultimate goal is to model and act full-time, but I also want my journey to show that Christianity isn’t about perfection or becoming what other people expect you to be. Believing in God doesn’t mean fitting someone else’s image of what a Christian is supposed to look like. My faith is part of who I am, but so is my individuality, and I’ve learned that the two don’t have to compete with each other.
For me, this journey has become about more than a career. It’s about becoming the woman I once hoped I would have the courage to be.
I think that’s the biggest part of my story: I didn’t wait until everything in my life was perfect to start believing there could be more for me. I started where I was, kept going, and I’m still writing the rest.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest things I had to learn early on in modeling was how to handle rejection. When you’re putting yourself out there for castings, agencies, bookings, and opportunities, you’re going to hear “no”—sometimes without ever knowing why.
At first, rejection was hard for me. But I’ve quickly learned to see it as a blessing. Sometimes rejection shows me where I have room to grow, and other times it simply means that opportunity wasn’t meant for me—whether that means not right now or not ever. Either way, I’ve learned not to let a “no” make me question whether I belong in this industry.
Now, rejection actually makes me excited about what is meant for me. I take whatever I can learn from it, I keep working, and I go even harder. Every closed door has made me more intentional about being prepared when the right one opens.
I’m still learning that this industry requires patience, consistency, and a willingness to keep showing up even when there’s no immediate reward. My road hasn’t been perfect, but I think the struggles have made me hungrier, more confident, and more appreciative of every opportunity I do receive.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a model and actress specializing primarily in commercial and lifestyle work, while also working across beauty, editorial, runway, and on-camera projects. Versatility is a huge part of who I am as a creative. I love being able to walk onto one set and feel approachable and relatable for a commercial campaign, then completely transform for an editorial concept or step into a character for an acting role.
What I love most about this work is that I’m not creating alone. Modeling and acting allow me to become one piece of a much bigger creative vision. I love working with photographers, designers, stylists, makeup artists, directors, and other creatives, taking direction and figuring out what I can bring to an idea to help tell the story the way it was envisioned.
I also think part of what sets me apart is that I don’t fit neatly into one box—and I don’t want to. I’m petite, tattooed, expressive, and feminine, and I can move between polished commercial work and something with more edge and personality without losing who I am. I want clients and creatives to see range when they look at my work.
I’m especially proud of how intentional I’ve become about my career. Every shoot, set, casting, and collaboration is an opportunity for me to learn something and become stronger at my craft. I’ve been able to work on commercial projects, appear in publications, work on acting sets, and collaborate with some incredibly talented creatives here in Virginia and beyond.
More than anything, I want to be known as someone who brings personality, professionalism, and intention to a set. I don’t just want to show up and take a beautiful picture—I want to understand the vision, contribute to it, and help bring it to life.
