Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Williams.
Tanya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always had a passion for doing my own nails as a young girl and knew that at some point I would pursue learning professionally more about nails; maybe as a college student I would do it to earn more money while I was earning my degree. Well, sorta. Life doesn’t always go in the direction we plan on it and as it turns out, I learned a little later than expected. Once licensed, I knew that I wanted to own a business of my own and I had a great idea to service people who would enjoy mobile nail services. After mulling over the idea a few years and working in a spa for few years, I finally had the faith to start test the waters and start my own business. After 2 years I moved into a brick and mortar space where I rented a room to perform services and took on mobile appointments when requested. I was set to move into a larger location as my clientele grew and as soon as I was ready to open, the pandemic shut down the beauty industry. It was the most devastating blessing in disguise I ever received. My clientele grew and was so loyal during that time period. I have learned so many valuable lessons from owning my own business, networking, growing, enrolling in workshops and continuing education classes, and partnering with other business owners and organizations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. I am a self funded start up. I had an idea fueled with passion and little funding when I started my business. Finding funding to take the business to the next level is a challenge. It takes time, effort, dedication, and strong will to make it happen. The sacrifice of working long hours away from your family, friends, and the things you enjoy doing can sometimes disconnect me. I have learned over time that I have to step away when I get overwhelmed and go do a feel good activity I enjoy to refuel myself so that I don’t burn myself out. Another part of the business is being in many roles of the business. I am an owner/operator, and so I am responsible for all facets of making sure it all gets done. I am a fan of technology and so I rely on it to assist me when I am using my hands to take care of the clients. I am in the process of learning more about artificial intelligence so that I can use more of it and employ it more in my business in the coming months to do more as I expand.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Yorktown is a county that is thriving and growing. It is keeping up with the trends and it big on welcoming change. York County is full of visual appeal. It is spread out enough that you can enjoy the views of the trees as you are driving along the roads during your commute and realize that you are in a place that is developing just enough with the conveniences needed in life, but can tuck away into quiet neighborhoods without all of the noise of the traffic. Traffic is a nice segue in my dislikes. Some of the main roads are still 2 lane roads and can become congested during midday and evening rush hour traffic. This area is home to all branches of the military, shipbuildings, and NASA, so there are a lot of commuters who work the same shifts, which can make getting to where you need to be challenging daily. Planning is essential.
