Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittani Benton.
Hi Brittani, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got my start in marketing in 2019 when I opened my Etsy mug shop, DUMugs. Like many small business owners, I made the products and figured out how to get people to buy them, so I started teaching myself marketing. When I launched my cosmetics line during the pandemic, I took social media and digital marketing classes to build on what I was learning firsthand.
In 2020, I became the social media manager at Stark & Legum, where I now manage marketing and events. I am also currently pursuing my marketing degree at the University of Baltimore’s Merrick School of Business to hone my craft and deepen my understanding of the field.
Today, I teach marketing and branding through my Brittani’s Bubble Substack and podcast and offer services through MyChelle Virtual Solutions. My focus is helping small business owners make sense of marketing and build brands that feel like them, because I know what it’s like to wear all the hats.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been smooth. Marketing takes a lot of trial and error, especially digital marketing. When you’re teaching yourself, you don’t always know what you’re doing or even what you should be asking. Sometimes you’re figuring it out as you go, and even now that I’m in school, I’m still learning.
My biggest struggle has been staying patient and remembering that results don’t happen overnight. I’ve learned that going viral isn’t the only measure of success, and a post with zero likes or interactions doesn’t necessarily mean no one saw it. It’s easy to get discouraged when the numbers don’t reflect the effort you put in, but I’m learning to look at the bigger picture, adjust when needed, and give myself room to grow. This is also what I teach my community and clients.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m the Marketing and Events Manager at Stark & Legum and the creator of Brittani’s Bubble, a podcast and newsletter that helps small business owners and creatives make sense of marketing, branding, and AI so they can bring their ideas to life and build brands that feel like them. I also offer digital marketing services through my virtual assistant company, MyChelle Virtual Solutions.
I’m most proud of the online growth I’ve helped Stark & Legum achieve. I’ve grown our community to nearly 8,000 across platforms and increased online sales by 200%, introducing a haberdashery with more than 100 years of history to a whole new audience that didn’t know it existed.
What sets me apart is that I genuinely enjoy working with older small business owners, especially those with brick-and-mortar stores, to bring their businesses online or strengthen their existing presence. I like breaking down analytics in a way that makes sense and helping owners understand that online success goes beyond likes and follower counts. For me, it’s about helping them connect with customers while keeping what makes their business special.
