Today we’d like to introduce you to Philip Harrell.
Hi Philip, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Right now, I’m at Filfest in Virginia Beach to celebrate Filipino heritage. I am not Philipino, nor is my wife but I firmly believe that cultures speak to each other through food. To my core, I believe that we all want the same thing. Good times with our family, to laugh with friends, and good food. We started Sundae Scoop to be that cross-generational space where everyone can smile together. Everyone gets to come in, share their ice cream story, relax with their flavor and their peace.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not. The day we opened our doors for business we had no more money in the bank account. We didn’t take out any loans, crowd funding, or anything. It was just us and god. We spent around $60,000 in repairs that first year. Hiring, firing, repairs, building systems, trusting other professionals, and growing are all different kinds of stress. However, it’s my stress that I created, not someone’s else’s stress that’s being dropped off on me.

We create small batch ice cream. We are most proud of the community we have built around our shop. People come to us because they want to. They lnow that they will receive excellent customer service, get delicious ice cream that is worth their money, and possibly stumble into a great conversation about ice cream, or business, or history.
Did you know that the Navy turned cement ships into ice cream barges during WW II. The barges would send ice cream to troops to help boost morale.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was always a good egg. I’ve held a firm belief in being good. As an only child by my mother I’ve always wanted to make her proud and just do the right thing.
I’ve always been pretty smart, an introvert at times, and I pride myself on working hard.
