Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Church.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story is one of those reminders that sometimes the things we never planned become some of the biggest parts of our lives.
Delicate Creations actually started completely by chance. I was working for a school when it abruptly closed, and suddenly I found myself trying to figure out how I was going to make ends meet. I started making cupcakes for extra money. There was no big business plan, no dream of becoming a cake artist, and definitely no idea of where it would eventually take me. I was simply doing what I could with what I had.
Then a friend asked me if I could make her a cake.
The truth is, I had no idea how to make one! But I said yes anyway. I went to Michaels, bought some cake decorating supplies, and spent an entire week practicing. I made her cake, she posted it on Facebook in January 2013, and somehow that one post changed the direction of my life.
The orders started coming in, and I just kept learning. I taught myself techniques, made mistakes, practiced, stayed up countless late nights, and continued pushing myself to get better. What began as a way to make ends meet eventually became Delicate Creations and opened doors I never could have imagined when I walked into Michaels that first week.
Over the years, my work has taken me from my own kitchen to television, including appearances on Food Network and Hulu, and given me opportunities to create for celebrities, national brands, television productions, major venues, and clients across the country. I’ve created everything from wedding and celebration cakes to massive custom pieces, including a seven-foot cake that was shipped across the country to Los Angeles. There have been some incredible moments along the way, but what means the most to me is knowing that all of it started with one cake I didn’t even know how to make.
At the same time, another important part of my story has always been helping people. My professional background in education and career services has allowed me to spend years helping students and graduates recognize their potential, prepare for careers, and navigate some of the same uncertainty that life has brought me at different points in my own journey.
When I look at my career now, the pieces actually fit together more than I once realized. Whether I’m helping someone find their next opportunity, managing a major event or project, or creating something extraordinary for a client, I’m a problem solver at heart. Give me a vision, a challenge, or even something I’ve never done before, and my instinct is to figure out how to make it happen.
I think that first cake taught me something I’ve carried with me ever since: you don’t always have to know exactly what you’re doing before you begin. Sometimes you say yes, buy the supplies, give yourself a week to figure it out, and discover a gift you never knew you had.
More than a decade later, I’m still creating, still learning, and still evolving. I’m continuing to grow professionally and expand into project management while keeping Delicate Creations as an important part of my story. I don’t know that I ever could have planned this journey, but I’m incredibly grateful that an unexpected ending in my life became the beginning of something I never saw coming.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, and I think that’s one of the biggest misconceptions people have when they see the finished product or some of the opportunities I’ve had. They see the beautiful cakes, television appearances, celebrity clients, and exciting projects, but they don’t always see everything that happened behind the scenes to get there.
I started Delicate Creations out of necessity after the school where I worked abruptly closed. I was trying to make ends meet, so from the very beginning, there was pressure to turn something I had just discovered into something that could actually generate income. I was learning how to decorate cakes while simultaneously learning how to run a business.
Being self-taught came with a lot of trial and error. There were plenty of late nights, mistakes, cakes that didn’t turn out the way I envisioned, and moments when I questioned whether I was good enough. I had to learn not only the creative side, but pricing, contracts, customer service, marketing, managing expenses, transporting elaborate cakes, meeting impossible deadlines, and eventually managing larger projects and events. There is so much more to this industry than making something pretty.
One of the hardest lessons has been learning that being talented at your craft and running a profitable business are two completely different skills. As a creative, you can easily pour so much of yourself into making something amazing that you underestimate your time, your labor, and your value. I’ve had to learn how to set boundaries, say no, price my work appropriately, and understand that every opportunity isn’t necessarily the right opportunity.
There have also been seasons when business was incredible and seasons when it slowed down. Entrepreneurship doesn’t come with a guaranteed paycheck. You still have bills and responsibilities whether the orders are coming in or not. Those quieter seasons can make you question everything, especially after experiencing major successes.
But some of my greatest growth has happened during those uncomfortable seasons. Every challenge forced me to learn something new, pivot, or become more resourceful. I’ve learned that success isn’t always a straight upward climb. Sometimes it means surviving a difficult season long enough to reinvent yourself for the next one.
More than anything, Delicate Creations has taught me resilience. I started this business because one door unexpectedly closed, and more than a decade later, I’m still here. There have been moments when I’ve been exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure about what was next, but I’ve continued creating and evolving.
I’m proud of the television appearances and the incredible clients and opportunities I’ve had, but I’m equally proud of the fact that I kept going during the seasons nobody saw. Those are the moments that really built Delicate Creations and built me.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Delicate Creations specializes in custom cakes and edible art, but I’ve never really considered myself someone who simply “makes cakes.” For me, the cake is a canvas. I love taking someone’s story, personality, brand, or even a completely outside-the-box idea and turning it into something they didn’t expect could be made out of cake.
I think I’ve become known for saying, “Let me figure it out.” Some of my favorite projects have started with an idea that had never been done before or at least something I had never done before. That challenge excites me. I love large-scale pieces, unusual concepts, realistic details, and designs that make people stop and ask, “Wait…that’s cake?”
Over the years, that creativity has led to opportunities I never imagined when I made my first cake in 2013. My work has been featured on Food Network, Food Network Canada, and Hulu, and I’ve had the opportunity to create for celebrities, major brands, television productions, and entertainment venues. I’ve also developed an ongoing relationship with Wolf Trap, creating custom cakes for performing artists over the years. One of my most unforgettable projects was creating a seven-foot faux cake for Too Faced Cosmetics and figuring out how to safely ship the entire piece across the country to Los Angeles. Projects like that are exactly why I love what I do they require creativity, problem-solving, planning, and a little bit of crazy!
I’m incredibly proud of the television appearances and national opportunities, but I’m probably most proud of the fact that I built Delicate Creations from nothing. I didn’t attend culinary school. I didn’t have formal cake training. I started with supplies from Michaels, a week of practice, and one friend willing to trust me with her cake. Everything that came afterward was built one order, one mistake, one lesson, and one opportunity at a time.
What sets Delicate Creations apart is that I don’t want my work to look like everyone else’s. If a client sends me an inspiration photo, my goal isn’t simply to duplicate it. I want to understand what they love about it and then create something specifically for them. I want people to recognize that there was thought, personality, and artistry behind the design.
But what I’ve learned after all these years is that people may initially come to me because of the cake, but the experience matters just as much. I’ve been fortunate to have clients trust me with some of the most important moments of their lives weddings, birthdays, baby showers, milestones, corporate celebrations, and even memorials. Being invited into those moments is something I don’t take lightly.
Thirteen years later, I’m still excited by a project that makes me wonder, “How in the world am I going to pull this off?” Because usually, somewhere between that question and the finished piece, I figure it out. And I think that willingness to keep challenging myself is a big part of what has made Delicate Creations what it is today.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best way to work with me is to bring me an idea—especially if it’s something a little different! Delicate Creations is available for custom cakes, milestone celebrations, weddings, corporate events, brand activations, entertainment projects, and creative collaborations. I especially love projects where I’m given the freedom to take a concept and turn it into something unexpected.
I’m also always open to collaborating with event professionals, venues, brands, artists, photographers, planners, and other creatives. Some of the most memorable opportunities in my career have come from relationships and someone simply saying, “I have an idea, and I think you’d be perfect for it.”
Supporting Delicate Creations can be as simple as following and sharing my work, referring someone who is looking for a custom cake artist, or keeping my name in mind when an opportunity comes along that needs a creative touch. Word of mouth and social media have been such an important part of my journey it’s actually how this entire business started back in 2013.
More than anything, I want people to know that I’m still creating, still evolving, and still open to seeing where this journey takes me next. Thirteen years ago, one Facebook post changed my life. You truly never know which introduction, collaboration, share, or crazy idea might open the next door.
