Check Out Laura Worrell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Worrell.

Hi Laura, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story with photography really started long before I ever had a business of my own. My mom was a photographer, and she was also a stay-at-home mom, so I grew up watching her balance both. I would often go with her to sessions and get to see firsthand what it was like to work with families and capture these really meaningful seasons of their lives. Without even realizing it at the time, I think that’s where my love for photography really began.

It wasn’t until I became a mother that I started seeing photography differently. Having my own children made me realize just how quickly the seasons of life pass, and how important it is to have something tangible to hold onto. I wanted to document my own family and the little moments I knew I would someday miss. That really inspired me to pick up a camera myself.

I started small, mostly photographing family and friends and learning as I went. What started as something I did because I loved it slowly turned into people asking me to photograph their families, their milestones, and their lives. I started taking it more seriously, investing in my education and my equipment, and really figuring out what kind of photographer I wanted to be.

From there, it just continued to grow. I officially started building Laura Worrell Photography, and over time I’ve had the opportunity to photograph families, couples, seniors, maternity, newborns, and so many different seasons of life. I’m still growing and learning every day, but it’s incredible to look back at where I started with a camera and a few friends and family members and see what it has become.

In a lot of ways, it feels like I’ve come full circle. I grew up watching my mom build a photography business while raising her children, and now I’m doing something very similar, building my own business while raising my kids at home. I never could have imagined that something I watched my mom do as a child would eventually become such a meaningful part of my own life.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. When I first opened Laura Worrell Photography about three years ago, there were plenty of failed shots, plenty of edits that I look back on now and think, “What was I doing?” and a lot of moments where I questioned whether I was actually good enough to do this. Learning photography is one thing, but learning how to run a business, build clientele, communicate with clients, edit consistently, and trust your own creative eye is a whole different challenge.

Not long after I started, I became pregnant with my first daughter. I had a difficult pregnancy and was very sick for most of those nine months, so I ultimately had to step away from photography for about a year. Having to pause something I had just started building was difficult, and coming back and trying to find my momentum again was another challenge in itself.

When I started back up, I had to rebuild, relearn, and continue figuring things out as I went. There were definitely times when I compared myself to other photographers or felt like I wasn’t progressing quickly enough. I think one of the hardest things has simply been learning to trust myself and my own work.

I’m still learning every day, but I’m much more confident in my work and in the photographer I’m becoming. Looking back, I’m actually grateful that the road hasn’t been perfect, because I don’t think I would have grown nearly as much if it had been.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a lifestyle family photographer, but I’m also a stay-at-home mom and a first responder’s wife. So I truly understand how important it is to preserve different seasons of life. I’m most proud of building Laura Worrell Photography while raising my family. It has grown alongside me, and every session feels personal rather than posed. What sets my work apart is the focus on authenticity, those little quiet moments, and telling your story in a way that feels natural and meaningful, not overly posed or stiff.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Some parts of my journey have felt like bad luck, like having to pause my business when I was pregnant and sick. But there have also been those unexpected good luck moments, like referrals showing up out of nowhere. But I really try not to rely too much on luck itself. Instead, I do just focus on staying present and working diligently. And my faith is a quiet foundation that keeps me steady. It reminds me to serve families with patience, kindness, and care, and to keep moving forward, even when things don’t go as planned.
