Hidden Gems: Meet Kylie of DC Strength & Nutrition

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kylie.

Hi Kylie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like a lot of people in the health field, my journey started while trying to find answers for myself. I was really sick, I wasn’t getting answers from any doctors or testing, I was exhausted beyond belief and “nothing was wrong”. I had recently finished my Masters in Nutrition, I was working in a hospital and had just opened my private practice when I finally got bloodwork back that showed I had Hashimoto’s. I was distraught. I remember very distinctly how hard it hit me for some reason. That night, I have a very distinct memory of sitting in my apartment at night with a little light, hunched over my computer, diving into any possible nutrition and lifestyle related support I could find for myself. The coolest thing I experienced was simply realizing that there was in fact so much that could be done to support. Thus, Strata Nutrition was born! Strata Nutrition was the first iteration of what is now DC Strength & Nutrition. I saw patients for GI and Autoimmune disorders, did functional testing, saw them out of my little apartment office, AND I LOVED IT. Eventually, I said farewell to my hospital job and focused full time on running my practice.

December 2019, I went on a blind date with a personal trainer. Now, we’re married and our businesses are too! BC Strength Training + Strata Nutrition became DC Strength & Nutrition. We have an in person location in the heart of Washington, DC in historic Blagden Alley where we work very personally with our clients on their nutrition and/or strength training programming.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course it wasn’t a smooth road! During the first years of the pandemic it was extremely difficult. Everything was just…weird and people weren’t sure if they would have a job or when their next pay check was coming so it was a really tricky period. Being willing to move away from one overly specific niche (which ANY business coach is going to insist you stick to) and open yourself up to helping the people who are right in front of you was another layer. Not all the people I work with now have GI and autoimmune disfunction. A lot of them just need help knowing how to feed themselves and that’s always something I stayed away from when I was building my business. Now, I love it!

We’ve been impressed with DC Strength & Nutrition, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At DC Strength & Nutrition we give our clients and community an understanding of how to take care of their health and longevity by teaching them how to build muscle through strength training and how to feed and fuel themselves with optimal nutrition. In both the training and nutrition aspect of what we do, we really focus on the personalization of the process. We use functional testing to support our nutrition patients with GI issues, we partner with local business to get DEXA scans for our clients so we can accurately track their progress, we meet people where they are to help carve out a path forward based on their personal goals and health history. What we see, is that when our clients combine the impact of strength training, with more optimal nutrition habits they see the biggest long term impact with their health.
