Conversations with Michelle Farmer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Farmer.

Hi Michelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Willow Woods Equine Sanctuary & Farm was started with $25 and a free horse from eBay. We rented an old barn from the church and started rehabbing it and slowly filling it with rescue horses that were headed to slaughter.. We are now at capacity and we have managed to continue to support these horses care for them provide them with the love and care that they so much deserve as well as necessary vet and Ferrier care all by the help of our community..

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle is funds. We are a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and rely solely on donations to survive..

Our other obstacle is the barn was in terrible condition when we took it, and we have been continually rehabbing this throughout, trying to support and care for our horses. We are in desperate need of a roof at this point..

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I have dedicated many years to working with the standard bred foundation on helping to save horses through their facility before branching out on my own.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We need volunteers from anything from mucking stalls to working with the horses. We need donations to continue to support the horses and repair the barn.. We look for sponsors. We have sponsorships for individual people who can sponsor a horse for $200 a month and act as it is their horse for the most part without all the additional fees they can come out every day of the week to spend time with the horse groom, the horse and they get to ride three days a week

Our other option is a corporate sponsorship where we’re trying to partner with different local businesses in the community to sponsor a horse. We would, of course, list the business on our website and social media.

Pricing:

  • $45 riding lessons
  • $200 sponsorships
