Today we’d like to introduce you to Gracie Parker.
Hi Gracie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being born into the industry and growing up in the construction and design world really shaped who I am today. My mom was a cabinet designer, and my dad owns Lynmark Construction, which operates as a residential and commercial custom builder. The home office was always full of sample books and plans. My parents are both insanely talented and creative, which I feel blessed to have inherited their passion for crafting beautiful spaces. Watching my father grow his business from scratch was my biggest inspiration, and I set my goal to own my own business at a very young age.
I originally started Millie & Parker Collective Designs as a virtual interior design studio in October 2024. I was creating mood boards and shopping lists for rooms across over 10 states in my first six months of business. I quickly fell in love with the industry and wanted to pursue higher education to start securing more in-person, hands-on local jobs. I enrolled in the University of Richmond’s Interior Decorating program, excited to get some formal training. Up until that point, I was entirely self-taught. I graduated from the program in April, and as I began preparing to fully dive into my design career, I received a text from a good friend, the owner of Rockview Construction, asking if I was interested in helping with outdoor living design. I had no idea that this opportunity would completely change the trajectory of my career.
Excited to have the chance to work on a local, hands-on project, I took two weeks to learn the software program and never looked back. Since April, I’ve had the opportunity to design several outdoor living spaces in Virginia, DC, Georgia, and Colorado. I fell totally in love with the outdoor living industry. The exterior of a home is a homeowner’s first impression, and arguably the most important one.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I am incredibly proud of the projects I’ve completed in just under six months of working fully in the outdoor living design world, I know I still have so much to learn. Every project teaches me something new, whether it’s a smarter workflow, a better way to communicate with clients, or a design detail I want to refine next time, and I try to carry those lessons into the next job. Learning to be a business owner has been a difficult but worthwhile road. There’s so much that goes on behind the scenes as a one-woman show, from managing client relationships to handling the business side, all while trying to keep the creative work at the center of it all.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I run Millie Parker Collective Design, a freelance 3D visualization and rendering business built specifically for outdoor living, pool, and landscape contractors. I specialize in turning a contractor’s rough sketch or scope into a photorealistic render the client can actually see themselves living in, before a single shovel hits the ground, covering everything from pools and patios to outdoor kitchens, hardscape, and landscape design. My deliverables go beyond a pretty picture: I provide scale drawings, dimensioned site plans with measurement callouts, and material square footages, so contractors have something they can actually build from, not just show off. I’m known as the “secret weapon” contractors bring in to close the deal, since clients tend to say yes faster and change their minds less mid-project once they can see the finished space rendered realistically instead of imagining it from a sketch or a verbal pitch.
What I’m most proud of is the network I’ve built in the industry in such a short time. I have a deep well of resources, from custom planters to unique fire features, and I take real pride in my ability to look at a space and turn it into something the whole family can enjoy, which comes from considering not just my own ideas but truly listening to my clients’ as well. What sets me apart is that I’m not a generic rendering service: having spent my life around contractors, I understand their workflow, their clients, and what actually moves a homeowner from “maybe” to “let’s do it.” Fast turnaround matters too. I deliver first drafts in three to four days and full designs in about a week and a half, so I keep pace with how quickly contractors need to move.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the countryside of central Virginia. There is truly nothing more magical than a ride through Monticello wine country or along Route 151 in Nelson County. We are so fortunate to be surrounded by small businesses in this area, and I think that’s what has allowed it to keep its charm, from family-owned wineries to the local coffee shops I can’t get enough of. There’s something special about starting a morning at a cozy, locally owned coffee shop before heading out for a day of work or exploring. However, one word of caution: avoid I-64 on a Friday afternoon. There truly is no worse traffic.
