Life & Work with Nathan Jarrelle of Virginia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathan Jarrelle.

Hi Nathan , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m Nathan Jarrelle, an independent recording artist, singer, songwriter, and U.S. Air Force veteran based in Hampton Roads, Virginia. My music crosses several genres, including Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, Alternative Rock, and Christian music. I’ve never been particularly interested in limiting myself to one sound because the experiences that inspire my music don’t fit neatly into one category.

Music became a way for me to express things I couldn’t always explain in conversation. Over time, songwriting grew into something much bigger than a creative outlet. It became a way to connect with people who have experienced heartbreak, uncertainty, struggles with faith, mental health challenges, and the difficult process of figuring out who they are.

My journey hasn’t followed a traditional path. While serving in the United States Air Force, I continued developing my identity as an artist, balancing military responsibilities with writing, recording, and releasing original music. That experience taught me discipline, adaptability, and the importance of following through on what I set out to accomplish.

As an independent musician, I’ve had to learn much more than how to make music. I’ve spent years studying the business behind it, from music marketing and branding to distribution, audience development, and building professional relationships. I’ve also had opportunities to perform outside Virginia, including in Syracuse, New York, and connect with people working in broadcasting, entertainment, and the creative industries.

What interests me most about music is its ability to reach people who might otherwise feel overlooked. Songs like “Nevermind ~ Never Mine,” “Carolina,” and “Jesus You Stayed” reflect different sides of my artistry, from relationships and personal reflection to faith and perseverance. I want listeners to find something familiar in those experiences, even if our lives look completely different.

Today, I’m continuing to develop Nathan Jarrelle as both an artist and a creative brand. I’m especially interested in building relationships throughout Hampton Roads and the broader Virginia music community, creating more opportunities for independent musicians, songwriters, producers, and other creative professionals.

Long term, my vision extends beyond releasing albums and performing. I want to build a media and entertainment business that brings together music, artist development, marketing, publishing, film, and other forms of storytelling.

I’m still building, learning, and finding my place in the industry. But one thing has remained consistent: I want to make music that means something to people and build a career that creates opportunities for others along the way.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced has been trying to build a career in music while managing everything else life has demanded of me.

During my time in the U.S. Air Force, I had to balance military responsibilities with my ambitions as a recording artist and songwriter. There were periods when I couldn’t dedicate as much time to music as I wanted, and maintaining momentum was difficult. Even after transitioning out of the military, I found myself having to adjust to a different way of life while continuing to pursue my goals.

Being an independent artist comes with its own challenges. You’re not just responsible for creating music. You’re also handling marketing, promotion, distribution, networking, finances, and finding performance opportunities. I’ve had to learn how the music industry operates, often through trial and error, while investing my own time and resources into building the Nathan Jarrelle brand.

Another challenge has been finding where I belong musically. My sound draws from Hip-Hop, R&B, Pop, Christian music, and Alternative Rock, which doesn’t always fit the categories people expect artists to stay within. I’ve learned that being versatile can open doors, but it can also make it harder to market yourself in an industry that often wants artists to be easily defined.

On a personal level, I’ve experienced disappointment, strained relationships, periods of uncertainty, and moments when I’ve questioned whether the sacrifices were worth it. My faith has played an important role in helping me work through those experiences. A lot of what I’ve gone through eventually finds its way into my songwriting, and I’ve learned that some of my most meaningful music comes from experiences I wouldn’t have chosen for myself.

I think one of the hardest lessons has been accepting that progress doesn’t always happen on the timeline you expect. I’ve had to become comfortable with starting over, hearing no, and continuing to put myself out there even when the results weren’t immediate.

I’m still working toward the career I envision, but those challenges have changed how I approach music, business, and relationships. They’ve also made me more intentional about creating opportunities for other independent artists and creatives, particularly here in Hampton Roads, Virginia. I know what it’s like to have something worth sharing and struggle to find the right platform for it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My music catalog is probably the best introduction to what I do. Recent songs such as “Nevermind ~ Never Mine,” and “Carolina” showcase different sides of my artistry. While tracks from earlier in my discography like “1996 (Space Jam),” which was released in 2020 has been gaining attention recently, which has been exciting to see as an independent artist.

I’ve never wanted my music to be predictable. Growing up with an appreciation for different genres has shaped my approach to songwriting, recording, and music production.

I blend Alternative Hip-Hop, contemporary R&B, Pop, and Alternative Rock to create a sound that reflects my experiences and influences without being confined to one genre.

What I find most rewarding is seeing how different audiences connect with my music. I want Nathan Jarrelle to be recognized as a singer, songwriter, and independent artist whose music crosses genres while maintaining an identity of its own.
