Today we’d like to introduce you to Brita Allgyer.
Hi Brita, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Northern Virginia, and my journey into physical therapy actually began with a very personal experience. After being involved in a car accident, I went through rehabilitation to regain my strength, mobility, and ability to return to the activities I loved. That experience gave me a firsthand understanding of how powerful physical therapy can be, not just physically, but emotionally. It inspired me to pursue a career where I could help others regain their independence, confidence, and quality of life.
I went on to earn my Doctorate in Physical Therapy and began my career in orthopedic rehabilitation. Over time, my professional interests became deeply connected to my own experiences with women’s health.
For years, I struggled with debilitating menstrual pain, which I later learned was caused by endometriosis. I understood firsthand how frustrating and isolating it can feel to experience symptoms that are often minimized, misunderstood, or dismissed. That experience opened my eyes to the tremendous gaps in women’s healthcare, particularly when it comes to pelvic health.
As a mother of four, I also experienced the physical changes and challenges that come with pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum recovery. I recognized how little education, guidance, and support women often receive during these important stages of life. So much attention is placed on the pregnancy and delivery, yet the mother’s recovery and long-term well-being can be overlooked.
These experiences ultimately inspired me to specialize in pelvic floor physical therapy.
I believe pelvic health, especially women’s pelvic health, remains significantly underserved. Too many women are told that pain, bladder leakage, painful intimacy, or other pelvic symptoms are simply things they have to accept. I want to help change that narrative. Women deserve to be listened to, educated about their bodies, and given the resources and support they need to feel their best.
That passion led me to establish Pelvic Healing and Wellness Physical Therapy in Herndon, Virginia.
My vision was to create something different from the traditional healthcare experience: a welcoming, peaceful, almost spa-like environment where patients receive individualized, one-on-one care and never feel rushed. I combine my orthopedic background with specialized pelvic floor rehabilitation, manual therapy, therapeutic movement, education, and a holistic approach to healing.
I believe in treating the whole person, not just a diagnosis. Pelvic health is closely connected to so many aspects of our lives, including physical comfort, emotional well-being, confidence, relationships, and overall quality of life.
One of the most rewarding parts of my career is seeing patients regain confidence in their bodies, return to activities they love, and realize that they don’t have to live with symptoms they once thought were normal or untreatable.
Building my own practice has been an incredible journey, both personally and professionally. It has allowed me to create a space that truly reflects my values and the kind of care I believe every patient deserves.
Today, I’m grateful to serve the Northern Virginia community where I grew up, doing work that I’m genuinely passionate about. My mission is not only to help patients heal, but also to educate and increase awareness, encourage conversations about pelvic health, and advocate for better support for women throughout every stage of life.
Ultimately, I want to be part of changing the way we approach women’s healthcare, one patient at a time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road certainly hasn’t always been smooth, but I believe some of the greatest challenges have also led to the most meaningful growth.
One of my biggest challenges has been navigating the responsibilities of motherhood while building and running my own practice. As a mother and small-business owner, I’ve learned the importance of being flexible, prioritizing what matters most, and finding ways to be fully present for both my family and my patients. Life doesn’t always go according to plan, and there have certainly been unexpected challenges along the way. Those experiences have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of perseverance.
Another challenge has been building a practice that operates differently from the traditional healthcare model. I wanted to create an environment where patients receive truly individualized, one-on-one care without the time constraints and limitations often associated with insurance-based practices. Establishing a practice centered around quality rather than volume required taking risks, trusting my vision, and helping patients understand the value of investing in their health.
There is also the ongoing challenge of raising awareness about pelvic floor physical therapy. Many people still don’t realize that treatment exists for conditions such as pelvic pain, painful intercourse, bladder and bowel dysfunction, and postpartum concerns. Others have lived with symptoms for years because they were told those symptoms were normal or simply something they had to accept.
Changing these perceptions takes time, education, and persistence. But it’s also one of the reasons I’m so passionate about what I do.
As a small-business owner, I’ve learned to wear many hats, from treating patients and managing daily operations to marketing, creating educational content, and building relationships within the community. Every stage has brought new lessons and opportunities to grow.
Through it all, I’ve remained committed to my original vision: creating a welcoming space where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered to take an active role in their healing.
Looking back, I’m proud not only of the practice I’ve built, but also of the challenges I’ve worked through to get here. They’ve strengthened my belief that meaningful work requires patience, dedication, and a willingness to keep moving forward, even when the path isn’t easy.
We’ve been impressed with Pelvic Healing and Wellness Physical Therapy , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pelvic Healing and Wellness Physical Therapy is a boutique physical therapy practice specializing in pelvic health, pelvic pain, and orthopedic rehabilitation, with locations in Herndon and Great Falls, Virginia.
With over 20 years of experience as a physical therapist, including a decade focused on orthopedics before specializing in pelvic health, I bring a unique, whole-body perspective to patient care. I believe that treating pelvic floor dysfunction requires looking beyond the pelvic floor itself. The hips, spine, core, posture, breathing patterns, and nervous system all play important roles in how our bodies function and heal.
My practice specializes in treating conditions such as pelvic pain, endometriosis-related pain, painful intercourse, bladder and bowel dysfunction, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, pregnancy and postpartum recovery, and chronic hip, back, and tailbone pain. I also work with men experiencing pelvic floor dysfunction.
What truly sets my practice apart is the personalized, one-on-one care I provide. Every patient receives my undivided attention in a private, calming, and supportive environment. I take the time to listen, understand their story, and develop a treatment plan that addresses their individual needs and goals.
My approach combines hands-on manual therapy, myofascial release, dry needling, therapeutic exercise, breathing techniques, and education. I also recognize that pelvic health concerns can be deeply personal, and I strive to create an environment where patients feel safe, respected, and comfortable discussing symptoms they may have struggled with for years.
As someone who personally experienced debilitating pelvic pain before being diagnosed with endometriosis, I understand how frustrating it can be to search for answers and feel unheard. That experience has shaped the way I practice and strengthened my commitment to helping others find relief.
One of the things I am most proud of is the emphasis I place on patient education and community awareness. My mission extends beyond the treatment room. Through social media, educational videos, and online resources, I work to make pelvic health information more accessible, reduce the stigma surrounding these conditions, and help people recognize that many symptoms they have been told are simply a normal part of life can actually be treated.
I want people to know that they do not have to accept pain, incontinence, or pelvic floor dysfunction as something they must simply live with.
Ultimately, Pelvic Healing and Wellness Physical Therapy is about much more than physical rehabilitation. It is about helping people reconnect with their bodies, regain confidence, return to the activities they love, and feel empowered in their health and well-being.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was very athletic and loved spending time outdoors. I was always on the move, whether I was playing sports, exploring outside, or finding ways to stay active. Sitting still was never my strong suit! Although I was somewhat shy, I was also curious, determined, and passionate about the things I enjoyed.
From a young age, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in medicine or healthcare, although I wasn’t quite sure what that would look like. Looking back, I think my love of movement, physical activity, and helping others naturally led me toward physical therapy. It’s a career that allows me to combine so many of the things I’ve always been passionate about.
