Today we’d like to introduce you to Charles Brown II.
Hi Charles , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My name is Charles Brown II, but most people know me as Batman. I’m a Hampton, Virginia native, a Navy veteran, and the founder of Darknight Entertainment. My journey has taken me through music, entrepreneurship, community organizing, and politics, with a common thread of connecting people and creating opportunities.
I got my start in the music industry working with the Def Jam and Atlantic Records street teams before joining the military. I was passionate about the work and wanted to build a career in entertainment, but I wasn’t able to make it financially sustainable quickly enough. That reality led me to join the United States Navy. As the child of two military veterans, I was proud to serve and carry on that family tradition.
After leaving the Navy, I returned to those street teams to reintroduce myself to the market and continue building my name and reputation. That meant getting back out there, developing relationships, supporting artists, and proving myself through consistent work.
During that time, my colleague and friend Adrian and I traveled to New York to visit our former boss, Keith, who had been promoted to an executive position there. We went hoping that the work we had put in might lead to jobs within the label. Keith wasn’t in a position to offer us those opportunities, but that trip became a turning point for me.
On the bus ride home, I came up with the idea for Darknight Entertainment. I wanted to create a vehicle to showcase my talent and work ethic while maintaining ownership over what I was building. I had learned that working hard and being valuable didn’t always mean you would be adequately rewarded. I wanted more control over my opportunities and a business where I could turn that effort into something lasting.
In 2003, I founded Darknight Entertainment. Over the years, my work has included marketing, promotions, event coordination, and artist development, helping artists build their brands and reach wider audiences. I became a Virginia promotions representative for Def Jam and had opportunities to work with artists including 2 Chainz, Wiz Khalifa, Malice of Clipse, Travis Porter, and K. Michelle. Along the way, I earned three Promoter of the Year awards, but the relationships and opportunities that came from the work have meant the most.Eventually I was offered and served as Virginia’s Defjam Marketing and Promotions Rep as well.
My work in entertainment also opened the door to community organizing. Through the Hip Hop Caucus and Respect My Vote, I saw how the relationships we build through music and culture could help people become more engaged in their communities. That led to roles with organizations including the League of Conservation Voters, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, and NextGen America.
Today, I serve as Political Director for Youth and College Campuses with Virginia’s Coordinated Campaign, focused on reelecting Senator Mark Warner and supporting the entire Democratic ticket while building student leadership and engagement across the Commonwealth. I also continue to grow my creative work through Darknight Entertainment, KnightVizion Management, and a new media venture Recon. My wife, Marquita Bianca, and I are also co-owners of Baila Fuzion, a dance and creative arts space.
It hasn’t been a straight path, but each chapter has built on the last. Promoting an independent artist, producing an event, supporting a small business, and helping someone find their voice all require relationships, trust, and consistent follow-through. Those are the foundations of how I work, and they continue to guide where I’m going.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been struggles along the way. Early on, one of the hardest parts was not understanding why I couldn’t turn what I was learning in the music industry into sustainable income sooner. I was putting in the work and gaining experience, but I couldn’t make it profitable quickly enough to avoid needing another path. That led me to join the Navy. I was proud to serve, especially as the child of two military veterans, but it was still difficult to reconcile my ambitions with my financial reality.
After returning to the street teams, I faced another tough question: Why hadn’t the work I’d done been enough to earn a job at a record label? I had to learn that dedication and effort don’t automatically translate into an available position or an opportunity when you’re ready for one. That experience helped inspire me to create Darknight Entertainment and build opportunities of my own.
Starting Darknight brought a different learning curve. To a certain extent, I was offering independent artists street team and marketing services I had learned through the labels. But I also had to explain why those services mattered and why they were worth paying for. Knowing how to do the work was one skill but communicating its value and building a sustainable business around it was another.
Learning to manage a team was also a major challenge. At different points, Darknight has been two people, and at others, we’ve had 30. Each version required something different from me as a leader. I had to figure out what success looked like with the people and resources we had, while adapting to the different eras of the music industry we’ve operated through since 2003.
I’m also continuously exploring how entertainment, community, politics, and advocacy connect. How do I bring these worlds together with purpose without compromising myself and what I stand for. Marketing and strategy play a major role in the work.Understanding an audience, developing a message that resonates, and creating programming or initiatives that turn attention into participation. I’m interested in how those tools can help strengthen communities, advance policy change, and give people a meaningful role in shaping what happens around them.
Today, the challenge is figuring out how I can do the most good. I want to keep advocating, pushing boundaries, and growing while being thoughtful about the space I occupy. I want my experience and relationships to help other people move forward, too. What matters to me now is making sure that as I continue to elevate, I’m helping others elevate in a meaningful way.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
This all started with my love for music. That love made me want to work for a record label. When that opportunity didn’t come together the way I imagined, I became a business owner and created my own path. That eventually led me into community organizing and a fascination with politics. I was particularly fascinated by how much entertainment and politics have in common.
In both worlds, branding, storytelling, relationships, and trust matter. You have to understand who you’re trying to reach, what matters to them, and what will inspire them to participate. Those connections have become a central part of my work.
Through Darknight Entertainment, I specialize in marketing, branding, promotions, event coordination, and artist development. Through KnightVizion Management, I work more directly with creatives on their careers and opportunities. My organizing and political work draws on many of those same skills: bringing people together, developing leaders, and turning ideas into action.
I’d say I’m known for connecting people and figuring out how to move an idea forward. Sometimes that means helping an artist reach a new audience. Other times, it means bringing partners together for an event or creating an initiative that connects culture with community engagement. I enjoy seeing possibilities across different spaces and helping people recognize what they can accomplish together.
What sets me apart is the combination of experiences I bring to the work. I’ve worked on street teams, promoted artists, built a business, managed teams, and organized in communities and on college campuses. Each experience has taught me something about how people connect with a message. It also shows what it takes to follow through once you have their attention.
I’m most proud of building something that has continued to evolve since 2003, and of the relationships I’ve developed along the way. It means a lot when someone trusts me with their career, their idea, or an opportunity that matters to them. Helping someone move forward is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
Virginia is a big part of my purpose, too. My wife, Marquita Bianca, and I recognize how special this place is and how much talent, culture, and possibility exist here. Through our work, including Baila Fuzion, our dance and creative arts space, we feel an obligation to support the arts, music, and positive movements happening around us. We want to help create opportunities for people to grow here and build something meaningful.
I’m still exploring all the ways entertainment, community, politics, and advocacy can come together. That curiosity keeps me moving. I want to create work that reaches people, gives them something to connect with, and helps them see a role for themselves in making their communities stronger.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
I’d say my dedication and work ethic. My parents instilled a strong work ethic in my sister and me early on. For a while, I was searching for a place to focus that energy. Once I found my passion, I became relentless about pursuing it, and that has served me well.
Especially in entertainment, no one is necessarily coming to find you and hand you an opportunity. It’s “show and prove.” I understood that from the beginning. I had to show up, make myself useful, follow through, and let my work build my reputation.
I also took responsibility for learning. I read books, watched interviews, asked questions, and picked the brains of some of the smartest people around me. I wanted to understand both how things worked and why certain approaches were successful.
That hasn’t changed. Even with the experience and résumé I’ve built, I still research and study my craft every day. Industries change, audiences change, and there’s always something I can learn or improve.
I never want to become complacent or assume my past work is enough. I want to keep getting better, evolving, and contributing something meaningful. I want my presence to have a purpose and my work to earn its place.
