Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Smith.
Hi Brittany, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I found a passion for art when I was 12 and have been drawing and painting ever since. I received a BFA in Painting, have taught classes, and painted murals. I work mostly on canvas but like to experiment painting on different surfaces . One year, I decided to create highly detailed acrylic portraits on craft pumpkins. What started as a fun side project became a source of commissions every Fall season. I especially like to offer the pumpkins to local businesses.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The first year of this project, I had to learn how to select the right type of pumpkins to paint on. Depending on the source of the pumpkin, not every surface will have paint adhere the same way. I had to figure out how to center each subject just right so that the lumps and ridges of the pumpkin wouldn’t distort the subject. I made mistakes and learned by trial and error. Some paintings ended up looking fine by one angle, but comically misshapen at another. I also had to find just the right amount of layering of paint to use. I work with acrylics, and too much paint on a specific area can build up hardened bumps on the surface. The most challenging aspect came at the end when I had to photograph the final result. Since these are three dimensional and full of ridges, I have to find the best angle while also capturing every detail.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a painter specializing in acrylic on canvas. My most requested commissions are pet portraits, although I will paint any subject. I have painted murals and large landscapes too. I’d say what sets me apart from most is the fine art on pumpkins I make every year. I enjoy the combination of creating highly detailed portraits with craft materials.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Learn how to market yourself and practice your art every day. I didn’t know how to sell my art in the beginning, but starting an instagram, reaching out to local businesses, and setting up booths at art fairs has helped the most. I have hosted painting events that benefited both my business and the local community. Most importantly, my advice would be to pace yourself but practice improving your skills every day, even if it is only a few minutes. All of it adds up.
