Today we’d like to introduce you to Leigh Hewartson.
Hi Leigh, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I came home to a 1972 Monte Carlo sitting in the driveway. My parents had taken my savings account and put a down payment on it for me. That was the summer before my junior year of high school. Luckily, my high school had a work program. I went to school until 11:20 am every day and then off to work I went. My best friend’s aunt was an abstractor at the local courthouse. That is where my journey began. All by paying my $120.33 monthly payment for a car. I abstracted through high school and my first year of college before being recruited by a large builder title company. That experience took me in a different direction all together. I was abstracting across the state and then moved into the settlement managers roll. Coordinating conducting settlements all across the state. Learning many of the county jurisdiction rules and regulations. It created a burning interest in me to learn more. Working for local attorneys and learning as much as I could. As a VP to a local large title company, I experienced many different types of closings and clients. This allowed me to create my own small boutique title company in which I have run for 18 years now. I believe in a custom and caring closing experience. Throughout my journey, I raised my 3 children and owned 2 small franchises with my husband as well. We now live on our small farm where I raise Scottish Highland cows and rescue dogs.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life is not a smooth road. Everything is unwritten. I have always struggled with balance of work and family life. Knowing what decisions to make and how to keep everything on the path I wanted. Sometimes it was better just to take the leap of faith and trust that all would be good.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Owning a title company isn’t something one dreams of. It’s a career that I was thrown into the middle of. Seeing my daughter company and join me in the business was a highlight. She appreciates my experience and knowledge more now than she ever did.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Have professionals around you that can be open and honest with questions and concerns. Learn from advice and what others have been through.
