Conversations with Theatre Shenandoah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Theatre Shenandoah.

It’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
The theatre was founded in the 2000’s. The building we occupy is an old Opera House that was in much disrepair. For the first few years we weren’t able to perform in the building because it wasn’t up to code, so we performed in various other spaces.

In 2011, a benevolent couple came forward and single handedly restored the building so we were able to perform there.

Since 2012, we’ve made major changes to the theatre, including restoring the balcony, upgrading to LED lights, remodeling the dressing rooms, and remaking the stage itself.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s always a challenge to find shows that fit our space. We’re basically a black box type of theatre with no proscenium, wings, or fly space, so we’re limited in certain ways. However, it’s never stopped us from doing big shows, such as Wizard of Oz, Matilda, and Fiddler on the Roof!

No matter the obstacles or challenges, we never let anything stop us!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Theatre Shenandoah is a nonprofit community theatre located in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley in Edinburg, Virginia. We are dedicated to bringing quality live theatre to our community while providing opportunities for people of all ages and backgrounds to experience the magic of the performing arts, both on stage and behind the scenes.

We produce a diverse season of live entertainment, including musicals, comedies, dramas, holiday productions, and special events such as our popular murder mystery dinner theatre. We also place a strong emphasis on youth theatre, offering young performers opportunities to develop their talents, build confidence, and discover a lifelong appreciation for the arts through productions and summer theatre camps.

What makes Theatre Shenandoah special is that we are truly a community theatre in every sense of the word. Our productions are brought to life by dedicated volunteers who give countless hours of their time and talent, from acting and directing to building sets, creating costumes, managing technical elements, and welcoming audiences through our doors. We are fortunate to have an incredible mix of experienced performers and individuals stepping onto the stage for the very first time.

One of the things we are most proud of is the sense of family that has developed within our theatre. Theatre Shenandoah is more than a place to see a show. It is a place where friendships are formed, generations come together, creativity is encouraged, and people find a sense of belonging. There is something incredibly rewarding about watching someone who was once hesitant to audition grow into a confident performer, or seeing a child discover the excitement of live theatre for the first time.

What sets us apart is the intimate, personal experience we offer. Our audiences aren’t simply spectators; they are neighbors, friends, family members, and supporters who are part of our story. In a small community like ours, the connection between the performers and the audience is something truly special.

Ultimately, we are proud that Theatre Shenandoah continues to demonstrate that exceptional live theatre doesn’t have to happen in a big city or on a grand stage. It can happen right here in a small Shenandoah Valley town, fueled by passion, creativity, volunteerism, and a community that believes in the importance of keeping the arts alive.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
The success of Theatre Shenandoah is truly a reflection of the incredible community that surrounds and supports us. As a nonprofit, volunteer-driven organization, we simply would not exist without the dedication, generosity, and passion of so many individuals and businesses who believe in the importance of the performing arts.

First and foremost, our volunteers deserve tremendous credit. From our Board of Directors, directors, actors, and production teams to the individuals working behind the scenes, selling tickets, building sets, sewing costumes, and greeting patrons, every person plays an important role in bringing our productions to life. Many of these individuals dedicate countless hours of their personal time simply because they love theatre and want to see it thrive in our community.

We are also incredibly grateful for our local business sponsors, individual donors, and community partners. Their financial contributions and in-kind support help us manage the costs of producing quality live theatre, maintain and improve our facility, and keep ticket prices accessible. Their generosity also allows us to invest in opportunities for young performers and the future of our theatre.

Of course, we cannot overlook our loyal audiences. Some of our patrons have supported Theatre Shenandoah for years, returning season after season, bringing friends and family, and enthusiastically spreading the word about our productions. Their continued encouragement is one of the greatest compliments we could receive.

We also owe a great deal of gratitude to those who came before us. The individuals who had the vision to establish Theatre Shenandoah, along with the generations of volunteers and supporters who have sustained it over the years, laid the foundation for everything we are able to accomplish today.

Community theatre is never the work of just one person. It takes an entire community of people who are willing to share their talents, resources, time, and enthusiasm. We are fortunate to be surrounded by people who believe that the arts matter, even in a small town, and who continue to help Theatre Shenandoah grow and flourish. We consider that support one of our greatest blessings.
