Today we’d like to introduce you to Lionel Sapp.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story really started from wanting to build a better future for myself and my family.
Before I got into tech, I worked jobs like truck driving and photography while teaching myself web development on the side. I didn’t come from a traditional tech background, so a lot of my journey was built through curiosity, discipline, trial and error, and learning how to figure things out when I didn’t have all the answers.
Over time, I started building websites, apps, and digital systems for people around me: small businesses, creatives, founders, organizations, and community projects. That eventually grew into The Digital Builders, my creative tech company focused on helping people turn ideas into real products, platforms, events, and brands.
What makes my path unique is that I don’t just see technology as code. I see it as a tool for storytelling, access, education, and community building. I’ve worked on client platforms, MVPs, event systems, websites, and creative projects, and I use tools like React, Next.js, Supabase, GitHub, Vercel, Stripe, Resend, and AI workflows to bring ideas to life faster and more intentionally.
Today, I’m focused on building software that is useful, human, and empowering. I’m still growing, still learning, and still sharpening my craft, but I’ve come a long way from teaching myself the basics to now helping other people build and launch their own visions. My story is really about transformation: taking what I had, learning what I needed, and using technology to create more freedom, opportunity, and impact.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, it has not been a smooth road, but I think that is part of what shaped me.
A lot of my journey has been built without a traditional roadmap. I did not come from a formal tech background, so I had to teach myself, learn through mistakes, and keep going even when I felt behind or unsure. There were times when I was working regular jobs, taking care of real-life responsibilities, and still trying to find the energy to learn, build, and create something bigger for myself.
One of the biggest struggles was learning how to believe that I belonged in rooms I had not been invited into yet. Tech can feel intimidating when you are self-taught, and entrepreneurship can feel lonely when you are figuring things out as you go. I have had to deal with uncertainty, financial pressure, difficult projects, self-doubt, and the challenge of building while still healing and growing as a person.
But those struggles gave me a different kind of strength. They taught me how to be resourceful, how to solve problems, how to communicate with people, and how to keep building even when things are not perfect. I think that is why my work is so people-centered now. I know what it feels like to need access, guidance, and opportunity, so I try to build things that help other people feel seen and supported too.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work sits at the intersection of technology, storytelling, and community building.
I build websites, apps, MVPs, and digital systems for founders, creatives, organizations, and community-centered brands. Through The Digital Builders, I help people take ideas that may feel scattered or early-stage and turn them into real platforms, products, and experiences. That can include everything from web development and software architecture to brand strategy, automation, event systems, client portals, and launch planning.
I specialize in making technology feel human and useful. I work with tools like React, Next.js, Supabase, Vercel, Stripe, Resend, GitHub, and AI workflows, but my real strength is helping people understand what they are actually trying to build and then creating a practical system around it. I’m known for being able to translate vision into execution.
What I’m most proud of is that I built this path from the ground up. I’m self-taught, and I’ve gone from learning the basics of code while working regular jobs to now building real client platforms, supporting creative businesses, and helping other people bring their ideas to life. I’m proud of projects like The Digital Builders, Totl Model Agency, and the different websites, systems, and community initiatives I’ve helped shape.
What sets me apart is that I don’t just approach tech as a technical task. I approach it as a form of service. I care about the story behind the product, the people using it, and the impact it can have. I can speak both the language of code and the language of vision, which helps me support clients who may not know exactly how to explain what they need yet.
At the core, I’m a builder. I help people turn ideas into structure, structure into systems, and systems into something real.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that many people may not know is that before I was building software and digital systems, I was a truck driver and photographer.
That part of my life shaped me more than people might expect. Truck driving taught me discipline, patience, independence, and how to keep moving even when the road is long. Photography taught me how to see people, moments, details, and stories. Both of those experiences still show up in my work today.
Even though I work in technology now, I do not see myself as just a developer. I see myself as a builder and storyteller. I think that is why I care so much about creating digital products that feel human, useful, and connected to real people’s lives.
