Hi Deanna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into construction began long before I ever owned a company. I grew up in Massachusetts, where my parents owned a successful construction and excavation business. As a teenager, I worked in the family business handling payroll and administrative duties, learning firsthand the value of hard work, customer service, and running a successful company.
After high school, I chose a different path and attended college to become a Physical Therapy Assistant. For the next 22 years, I had the privilege of helping people regain their strength, mobility, and independence. Physical therapy was more than a career—it was my passion. I loved helping others improve their quality of life.
As a single mother raising two young boys, I was always focused on creating a secure future for my family. Although I had achieved success in my profession, I eventually realized I had reached the maximum financial growth my career could offer. I knew I needed to explore new opportunities.
That opportunity came when I partnered with a local builder who asked if I would be interested in building a home. I took a leap of faith and said, “Why not?” Within a year, we had built 11 spec homes in Suffolk, Virginia. Seeing those homes come to life reignited my passion for building and entrepreneurship.
To better serve our clients, I obtained my real estate license and began selling the homes we built. As my experience and confidence grew, I eventually earned my Class A Builder’s License and launched my own company.
Over the years, I have built strong relationships throughout the community and earned the trust of homeowners, real estate professionals, and business partners alike. What started as a new opportunity grew into a thriving business specializing in roofing, remodeling, additions, custom homes, and complete home renovations.
Today, one of my greatest accomplishments is seeing my two sons join the family business. Together, we are building not only homes and renovations but also a legacy. Our goal is to continue growing DB Construction & Roofing for generations to come while serving our community with the same values that have guided us from the beginning.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Entering a male-dominated industry with no formal construction background beyond your family experience.
Leaving a 22-year healthcare career and starting over in a completely different profession.
Building a business while raising two young sons as a single mother.
Learning the complexities of construction management, estimating, permitting, and project scheduling.
Taking on the financial risks that come with building spec homes.
Navigating economic downturns, changing material costs, and labor shortages.
Earning credibility and trust as a woman-owned construction company.

The accomplishment I am most proud of isn’t a particular roof, remodel, or custom home—it’s building a successful company while raising two sons and creating an opportunity for them to become part of something bigger than themselves.
I took a leap of faith by leaving a 22-year career in physical therapy and starting over in a completely different industry. Through hard work, perseverance, and a commitment to doing right by people, I built a company that serves our community and supports my family. Today, seeing my sons work alongside me and share the same passion for quality craftsmanship is incredibly rewarding. Knowing that DB Construction & Roofing has the potential to continue for future generations is something I never take for granted.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I believe the construction industry will continue to evolve rapidly, driven by technology, changing homeowner expectations, and the growing need for skilled tradespeople.
One of the biggest challenges will be the shortage of skilled labor. As many experienced tradespeople retire, there will be an increasing demand for younger generations to enter the industry. That’s one reason I’m so proud to have my sons involved in the business—it’s important to pass down knowledge and craftsmanship to the next generation.
I also see homeowners becoming more focused on quality, energy efficiency, and long-term value rather than simply choosing the lowest price. Products and building methods will continue to improve, especially in roofing, insulation, and sustainable building materials. Smart home technology and energy-efficient upgrades will become standard expectations rather than luxury features.
Technology will also play a larger role in construction. From estimating software and project management tools to drones, 3D modeling, and advanced measuring systems, contractors who embrace technology will be able to provide better communication, greater accuracy, and a better overall customer experience.
Despite all the changes, I believe some things will never change. Homeowners will always value honesty, reliability, craftsmanship, and trust. Companies that focus on doing quality work and treating customers the right way will continue to thrive.
