Today we’d like to introduce you to Jalen Nichols.
Jalen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Creativity has always been part of my foundation. I come from a musical family—my grandparents played instruments and sang, and music has continued throughout each generation. Ironically, I wasn’t interested in music at first. My first real spark came through guitar and playing the video game Guitar Hero. I became fascinated with classic rock songs like “Smoke on the Water,” “Iron Man,” “Sweet Child o’ Mine,” and “Carry On Wayward Son.” After learning numerous songs through the game, I became inspired to pick up an actual guitar and learn how to play them for real.
That experience opened the door for me to explore music more deeply, with jazz, gospel, and rock becoming the first genres that truly captured my attention. I started playing keyboard at 14 and began producing at 17. What started as curiosity and a genuine love for music gradually developed into a career spanning more than a decade.
Over the years, I’ve grown from being a musician into a producer, music director, multi-instrumentalist, session musician, and live-show programmer. Much of my development happened in church, where I learned how to lead musicians, arrange songs, direct rehearsals, program live performances, and understand how music can shape an entire experience. Since 2017, I’ve also produced and arranged music for independent artists residing throughout Richmond, Hampton Roads, Washington, D.C., Maryland, Atlanta, Dallas, and Los Angeles.
As I continued growing, I realized my creativity wasn’t limited to music. Modeling became another form of expression for me—one that allowed me to explore fashion, visual storytelling, and how an artist presents themselves to the world. Whether I’m producing a record, directing a live show, performing on keys, developing a visual concept, or stepping in front of the camera, it all comes from the same place: a desire to create something memorable and meaningful.
Today, I bring all of those experiences together as a multidisciplinary creative. I’m still evolving, still learning, and still pushing myself to become one of the most respected and impactful producers and creative minds in the industry.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been waiting for placements and opportunities while continuing to believe in the value of my work. I’ve produced records without receiving the proper credit, and there have been many times when I wasn’t compensated according to my worth as either a musician or producer.
Because I started young, I was sometimes taken advantage of by people who recognized my gift before I fully understood its value. I gave my time, talent, and energy to situations where I was being used more than I was being developed or appreciated. I’ve also faced rejection multiple times and experienced betrayal from people I trusted personally and professionally.
Those experiences were painful, but they taught me the importance of knowing my worth, protecting my work, understanding the business, and setting stronger boundaries. Every rejection, delay, and disappointment has helped shape me into a wiser, more resilient creative—and it has made me even more determined to build a career rooted in integrity, ownership, and purpose.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the heart of what I do, I create experiences through sound, leadership, and visual expression. I’m a musician, producer, music director, multi-instrumentalist, session musician, live-show programmer, model, and creative. That may sound like a lot of titles, but to me, they’re all connected. Whether I’m behind the keys, producing a record, directing a rehearsal, building tracks for a live show, developing a visual concept, or standing in front of the camera, I’m telling a story.
Musically, I specialize in taking an idea and helping it become a complete experience. I don’t just hear chords and melodies—I hear transitions, dynamics, textures, vocal moments, lighting cues, and the emotion the audience should feel. I’m usually thinking about what happens before the first note is played and what people will still be feeling after the final note ends. My experience in gospel, R&B, hip-hop, pop, contemporary Christian music, and rock has given me the ability to move between different sounds without losing who I am.
A major part of my foundation came from serving in church. Church taught me that music is bigger than performance. It taught me how to listen, lead people, adapt in real time, and understand the responsibility that comes with helping create a moment that may genuinely affect someone’s life. That mindset has followed me into every room I enter. I care about excellence, but I also care about people. I want the artist to feel understood, the musicians to feel prepared, and the audience to feel something real.
I would say I’m known for my versatility and for hearing the bigger picture. I can sit at the keyboard and play, step behind the computer and produce, lead the band, direct the rehearsal, program the show, help shape the artist’s vision, and understand how the visual presentation should complement the music. I don’t approach creativity from only one angle, and I believe that allows me to bring something different to every project.
What I’m most proud of, however, isn’t one title, performance, or placement. I’m most proud that I kept going. There were times when my gift was valued more than I was as a person. I’ve been overlooked, underpaid, denied proper credit, turned down, and betrayed by people I trusted. Those experiences could have made me bitter or caused me to walk away from music completely. Instead, they taught me to recognize my worth, protect what I create, and become more intentional about the people and opportunities I align myself with.
What sets me apart is that I still create from a genuine place. After everything, I haven’t lost my love for the work or my desire to serve people through it. I carry my family’s musical legacy, the discipline I developed in church, the lessons I learned through disappointment, and the vision of where I know I’m going into everything I touch. I’m not interested in simply being seen as talented—I want my work to have weight. I want people to hear it, see it, and feel that somebody cared enough to make every detail matter.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Truthfully, I haven’t had a large support system throughout this journey. There were many seasons when I felt like I was carrying the vision by myself. That made the support I did receive even more meaningful.
My parents, Randal and Vonda Nichols, deserve a tremendous amount of credit. They have consistently believed in me, encouraged me, and supported my creativity even when the road was uncertain and the results hadn’t caught up with the vision yet. When you’re pursuing something that other people can’t always see or understand, having parents who continue to stand behind you means more than words can fully explain.
My best friend, Kai Alexander, has also played a major role in my journey. Kai is a guitarist, musician, producer, and DJ, but beyond that, he has truly been my road dog. We’ve experienced many of the same struggles—being overlooked, undervalued, underpaid, and having to keep believing in ourselves when opportunities weren’t coming as quickly as we hoped. There’s something powerful about having someone beside you who doesn’t just sympathize with the struggle but genuinely understands it because they’re walking through it too. We’ve encouraged each other, challenged each other creatively, shared knowledge, and reminded one another not to give up.
I also have to recognize my beautiful partner, VAWNN, whose support has meant so much to me both personally and creatively. She is an artist, musician, vocal coach, business owner, creative director, and artist developer, so she understands the amount of sacrifice, faith, discipline, and patience this journey requires. Being able to share ideas, dreams, challenges, and creative vision with someone who is building alongside me has been incredibly special. She has encouraged me, challenged me, and helped me continue seeing the bigger picture during moments when the road felt heavy.
I also have to give credit to the artists I’ve worked with who have supported me, trusted my ear, respected my creativity, and continued to bring me into their process. Every artist who trusted me with their music, recommended me to someone else, spoke my name in a room I wasn’t in, or simply reminded me that my work mattered has contributed to my growth.
My circle may not have been large, but the support I’ve received from the people who truly believed in me has been real. I don’t take any of it lightly. When you’ve had to fight for your value and keep going without a crowd cheering you on, you never forget the people who chose to stand beside you.
