Check Out Maggie Morris’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Morris.

Hi Maggie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was in high school, my mom would gather with all the other parents before prom and homecoming and take pictures of us all lined up in “prom prose”. I’d get home and review the photos and was frankly, always quite dissatisfied with my mother’s work.

If you’ve ever been given “feedback” by me, you know it’s pretty errr critical. So, to no one’s surprise, she got fed up with my critiques and said “Here, YOU take the camera then. You can have it.”

Needless to say, I was THRILLED. The power was now in my hands, I could control my image. I ordered a tripod and immediately got hooked. I quickly realized how good I could make myself feel by capturing myself with a camera, the way I had always wanted to be seen.

After a handful of shoots with friends, I soon realized that translates to other people too. I can actually make someone feel beautiful, powerful, strong, confident, sexy, seen or adored. I can give them that gift.

Fast forward to college, with my family DSLR in tow, I captured content for Greek orgs, headshots for clubs and grad photos for friends. Time and time again, I realized the ability I had to see people through a lens, and make them see themselves the way I did.

One day, I stumbled upon a wedding photo on Instagram and had the feeling “I can do that photo better.” That’s that’s where my adventure into weddings began.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like every entrepreneur, I’ve had my fair share of trials, many of them my own doing. I never learned how to properly manage a business or manage money, and I ended up learning how to by first doing it utterly wrong.

In 2021, I quit my consulting job with $500 in my bank account to pursue wedding photography full-time. I was totally unprepared for the investment that would come with that leap. As a result, I accrued what, to me, felt like an overwhelming amount of debt. I wasn’t sure how to manage it or overcome it.

Luckily, the wedding industry is full of brilliant, generous people who are happy to share what has worked for them. A friend of mine connected me with her financial advisor, who completely changed the way I see, spend and invest. And that was instrumental in shaping the path of my business.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The thing that got me in trouble as a child — my fervent curiosity and observation, is now one of my greatest strengths as an artist. I believe if you just pay attention to the events on the wedding timeline, you miss the life that unfolds in between. I don’t ask for performance, I ask for presence. I strive to share moments with people, not take them. In all of the bright moments, and all of the dark ones too, I strike a balance of empathy and professionalism. I like to think I’ve mastered the art of reading the room: intentional, yet effortless; less fly on the wall, more included. I believe photography is the process of freezing what it means to feel seen.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I am not THE best. But I’m most proud of how I make people feel. I aspire to see you, to embrace you and to uplift and celebrate you however I can.
