Check Out Myra Janell’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Myra Janell.

Hi Myra Janell, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Myra Janell. I was born in Bethesda, Maryland, raised in Washington DC, and lived in various parts of Northern Virginia. I come from a two parent household, with two sisters, and I am a military brat. My dad served in the military for 22 years and my parents taught me to keep God first, work hard, and the importance of family no matter how far you go in life. I am a singer/songwriter, woman of faith, a fashion business owner, lover of math and numbers, helping people manage their mental health, and an independent artist. According to my mother, I started singing at the age of 2 and I would change my clothes three to four times a day as a child. My gift of singing began to blossom in the children’s church choir and being apart of chorus from middle school to my freshman year of high school. I was very shy as a child and it wasn’t until my sophomore year of college when I sang my first solo. One of my friends told me he signed me up for open mic night and that I didn’t have a choice to say no. I sang Lift Every Voice and Sing and the rest is history. I am so thankful for people that were placed in my life to push me into purpose and to remind me of the gifts I tried to hide. After overcoming my fear from singing alone, I began to receive requests for certain events on campus. I had the opportunity to sing for my university presidents, and one of my most memorable moments was singing in front of Malcolm X daughter, Ilyasah Shabazz for our MLK Commemorative program during my senior year in 2018. I was able to speak to her after the event, we hugged, she told me to keep going, and that she enjoyed my performance. Throughout my college experience, I learned what it really meant to balance school, being an entrepreneur, and maintaining my gift of singing for the events held at school. I was one of the most highly requested photographers while attending Radford University, whether it was for graduation or for concerts held on campus. Although I am no longer a photographer, I am grateful for the foundation and preparation it served as a business owner.

Fast forward to the pandemic is when I began to take music seriously and discover my purpose. I truly believe it is important to know your reason why you were created and the impact you were meant to have while you are on earth no matter how big or small. I remember posting a singing video on my instagram and a college friend of mine commented asking if I wanted to make music. The producer Quinntarantino sent me beats, and created the custom beat for my first song. You never know who is watching and what will take place after you give God your yes. I wrote my first single “Stay” which both the song and music video was released on August 15, 2021. I am thankful for one of my coworkers, who connected me with the music producer Ay Rock to record, mix, and master my first record. I remember him being very surprised about our session being the first time I recorded a song in the studio and being told that I was almost at the level of Beyonce recording perfectly.

By May 22, 2022, I released my first EP fully recorded in Atlanta, GA. I am thankful for my coworker who told me to come record with her husband which was a huge blessing just starting out as an indie artist and fully funding everything myself. All of the seeds planted in the ground have now began to blossom and I am reminded that all of your hard work will not be wasted if you just keep going. Doors began to open for me as I was able to sing for the Black Girl Art Show for two consecutive years and sing Great Is Thy Faithfulness while visiting Philadelphia at a church located in New Jersey. All of these moments developed my stage presence and the most important part of connecting to people reminding them of hope in whatever they are facing in life.

On May 25, 2025, I took the leap of faith to launch my fashion business called Femme Virtueuse Proverbs 31, LLC. I am currently a fashion stylist in hopes of one day shifting into a full fashion warehouse business with clothes, shoes, perfume, and purses. I love being able to create, take risks, and birth my own style through fashion. My purpose for my business is to remind men, women, and young girls that modesty does not have to be boring. You can have fun, be confident, know your worth, and still represent for the Kingdom without overspending. I want anyone who books with me to be reminded that no matter their shape or size, that no mistakes were made when they were created.

On August 29, 2025, I released my first album called Becoming: A Virtuous Woman. I had the opportunity to work with Grammy award winning producer Matt “Automattic” Ticcino at Milkboy Studio in Philadelphia, producer DIVI based in Australia, producer Quinntarantino, producer TeaTime Jones, pianist Rob Poles, and guitarist Scottie. Creating this album and the recording process took place at a pivotal point in my life. I lost my job and was able to solely focus on creating my album. I believe everything happens for a reason and I hope when people take a listen to my album they are left feeling hopeful, joy, peace, and a sense of healing. This album for me is stepping into Womanhood as I have left my twenties behind and embracing all that God has called me to be. Although, this still feels like the beginning of my music career, I am thankful for all of the milestones I have reached and I am so excited for what is to come. To anyone reading this, I hope you are reminded to go after your desires, walk in freedom, and embrace the journey. You are not too old to start and you can defy the odds that are stacked against you.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey has not been smooth and I have had to overcome obstacles along the way. I don’t believe in changing anything I have faced because it led me to becoming the woman I am today. Some of the struggles I have faced are funding certain projects, being overlooked, waiting for clients to come in, and even having moments of doubt. Losing my job in 2025 taught me the importance of having faith, taking risks even when I don’t see the things I am believing for, and being more grateful for family. When you no longer have financial stability, you can choose to panic or you can choose to shift your thinking to what is it that I need to learn or gain in this process as a business owner? I believe if you want to be great you must disconnect yourself from time and shift your focus to building. Building things are created in the quiet, when no one is watching, when people don’t have a front row seat to your day to day process. It’s the part people hate to discuss but is always an important piece of reaching your goals whatever you are going after in this life. When money is no longer incoming, it is a human reaction to doubt yourself, wondering if you are on the right path or if you are even good enough, and what is going to happen next? I had to dig deeper within myself to learn what it looks like to wait with faith and with a good attitude for the life I have been dreaming to have. I had to learn to enjoy the journey and that we all must overcome something in order to get to where we desire to be. The ugly parts are just as important as the beautiful ones we face throughout our journey. The testing of our faith is what births our testimony of what we can achieve when we let go, release the projections that others place upon us, and we continue to take those steps towards our goals.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an independent inspirational music artist. I am known for having a distinctive sound, being a visionary and leaving an iconic fashion imprint for my musical projects. I specialize in making music that has a positive message that invokes and stirs hope in the listeners of my music. A lot of people when they see me since I am petite don’t expect my voice to be powerful but that also is a reminder to never judge a book by its cover. I am most proud of seeing how much I have grown as writer, what started as writing poetry emerged into songwriting for my own music. I am proud of seeing myself overcome fear and being reminded that my gifts are not to be kept a secret but are for what happens to the listener when I walk in my gifts with confidence. What sets me apart is my confidence knowing that I don’t have to appease to the standards of what a musical artist should look like or having to change myself in order to be seen. I know who I am and I know that my gifts make room for me when I walk in them freely. I believe in moving at my own pace and not letting society rush me now that I am in my thirties. I love showcasing my creativity with fashion in my music videos and utilizing those around me to bring my vision to life.
