Community Highlights: Meet Christian HOEFFEL of Vineyard Voyages

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christian HOEFFEL.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m an educator by trade and an international traveler at heart. Over the years I’ve visited wineries across six continents, and what stuck with me was how easy and welcoming the best wine regions abroad made it to explore. You’d show up curious, someone would take care of the logistics, and you’d leave knowing more about the place, its people and its wine without ever feeling lectured.

Back home in the DC area, I realized Virginia wine country had all the ingredients, world class wineries, beautiful Loudoun County scenery and incredibly passionate winemakers, but getting out there and doing it well was harder than it should be. So in May 2024 I launched Vineyard Voyages to bring that same ease and sense of discovery to Virginia.

We started with scheduled Saturday tours picking up right from the West Falls Church Metro, and we’ve grown into private tours for groups of 10 to 50, corporate outings, bachelorette and celebration tours, bus rental, and even international wine journeys. Along the way I earned my WSET Level 2 and became a Certified Tourism Ambassador, and every host on our team is a Certified Tourism Ambassador too. We were honored to be named Visit Loudoun’s 2024 New Tourism Business of the Year, and today we’ve welcomed more than 2,000 guests and hold a 5.0 rating on Google. As a gay and Latino owned business, it also means a lot to me that everyone who steps on our bus feels genuinely welcome.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not always! Like any small business, there have been plenty of lessons along the way.

The biggest one has been building a business while still working in education. Early on I was wearing every hat at once: marketing, bookings, winery partnerships, driving logistics and hosting. Learning to build systems and a great team of hosts and drivers has made a huge difference.

Running a bus also comes with its own surprises. We’ve had a mechanical breakdown out in Leesburg in the middle of a tour day, and moments like that teach you fast how much planning and backup matters when guests are counting on you.

Demand that swings from weekend to weekend is another real challenge, so we’ve worked hard on filling quieter dates, adding new experiences like our Sunday Funday tour, and growing private, corporate and international trips so the business isn’t relying on just a handful of busy weekends. We’ve also changed booking platforms and rebuilt a lot of our tools behind the scenes. None of it has been easy, but every challenge has made the guest experience better.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Vineyard Voyages is a wine tour company based in Northern Virginia that takes guests into the heart of Loudoun County wine country, DC’s Wine Country. We handle the transportation, the timing and the winery reservations so our guests can simply relax, sip and enjoy the day.

Our scheduled Loudoun County 3-Winery Day Trip picks up right at the West Falls Church Metro and at Market Station in Leesburg, which makes it easy for folks in DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia to get out to wine country without anyone needing to drive. We’re also launching Sunday Funday, a shorter, brunch-friendly Sunday tour with two wineries. Beyond our public tours, we specialize in private experiences for groups of 10 to 50: corporate team outings, bachelorette and bachelor parties, birthdays, clubs and associations, and other celebrations. We also offer bus rental and international wine journeys for travelers who want to explore wine regions abroad.

What sets us apart is our approach to hospitality. Our guiding ideas are hospitality before hype, wine without intimidation, and thoughtful coordination. Every one of our hosts is a Certified Tourism Ambassador, and we keep the wine conversation fun and approachable, whether it’s your first tasting or your fiftieth.

Brand wise, I’m most proud of the community we’ve built. We’ve welcomed more than 2,000 guests, we hold a 5.0 rating on Google, and we were named Visit Loudoun’s 2024 New Tourism Business of the Year. We’re also a certified LGBT and minority owned business, and creating a space where everyone feels welcome is at the core of who we are. Learn more and book at vineyardvoyages.com.

Can you share something surprising about yourself?
A lot of our guests are surprised to learn that I’m an educator too. Alongside running Vineyard Voyages, I work in education, coaching and facilitating professional learning sessions for teachers in several states. That teaching background shapes everything about how we host: share what’s useful, invite questions, and never make anyone feel lectured or intimidated.

People are also sometimes surprised by how far the wine curiosity goes. I’ve toured wineries across six continents, and that love of travel is why Vineyard Voyages now offers international wine journeys in addition to our Virginia tours.
