Before we were business partners, we were teammates. Our story began more than 20 years ago on the football field at the University of Richmond, where Adrian Archie, Jermaine Slade, and I built a friendship that continued long after our playing days..
Adrian later started Pet N’ Mind, an all-natural pet store. Jermaine and I believed in his vision and invested in the business, with the hope of helping it grow through franchising. Then COVID changed the way I worked. I was in medical sales, but I couldn’t get into my accounts. That gave me the time—and the push—to think about what we could build ourselves..
We came up with the idea for our own line of natural dog treats that we could bring into stores. That idea became small BIG Dog Naturals, and it’s been my baby ever since.
What began with friendship and teamwork has grown into a brand built around helping dogs live healthier, happier lives..

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. Marketing is tough, and starting a business means making mistakes, learning from them, and figuring things out as you go. Social media adds another challenge: creating content, posting consistently, and trying to stand out in a crowded feed all take time and effort.
Time management is hard, too. I wear a lot of hats, and there are only so many hours in the day. Growing without the funds to invest in every opportunity can be frustrating. Companies that offer help can be too expensive, or we’re not yet at the size where they’re interested in working with us.
It can be a lot, but this business is my baby. I believe in what we’re building and in the care behind our products. That keeps me dedicated, even when the road gets difficult.
