Today we’d like to introduce you to Ernisha Hall.
Ernisha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My story really begins with service. Long before I led a chamber, I was deeply committed to social work, advocacy, and giving back to the community. I earned a bachelor’s degree in forensic psychology and later an MSW because I wanted to support people who were underserved, under-resourced, and too often overlooked. At one point, I wanted to work in the prison system to help reduce recidivism among young Black men. I also worked as a family preservation specialist and a child protective specialist. Even then, the common thread in my life was always the same: I wanted to help people gain access to opportunities and support that could change their future.
I also come from a background that shaped how I see the world. I was raised by a single Black mother in New York, and although we did not grow up with wealth, I grew up around generosity. I watched the women in my life give, serve, and pour into others no matter how little they had. That taught me early that abundance is not only about money. It is also about how you show up for people and how you create impact with what you have.
That mindset stayed with me and eventually shaped the work I do now. The Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce began in 2020 as the Virginia Black Business Directory. What started as a way to create visibility and connection for Black businesses grew into something much larger as the need became more clear. Over time, that work evolved into the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce, while our original 501(c)(3) became the VABCC Foundation.
Today, I serve as the President and CEO of the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce, and my work centers on creating access, opportunity, and long-term economic empowerment for Black businesses and underserved communities across Virginia. When I look at the full arc of my journey, everything I have done along the way, from social work to advocacy to community-building, really led me here. This work is not just what I do. It is an extension of who I have always been.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the most consistent challenges I have faced is being underestimated. As the leader of a Black organization, I have had people question my qualifications, my expertise, and even my credibility in ways that are both subtle and direct.
I remember one woman at a national bank questioning what qualified me to lead this work when I called about a grant opportunity. That moment stayed with me. It pushed me even harder and reinforced what I already knew, that I belong in every room I enter.
I have also had moments where people in my own community seemed surprised to learn I was highly educated. A few years ago, someone was reading my bio at an event and mentioned my academic background, including my degrees, and I could hear audible surprise behind me. That kind of experience reminds you very quickly that people often make assumptions before they understand your story.
But I have never allowed that to stop me. If anything, those moments sharpened my focus. I know who I am, I know what I bring, and when I set my mind to something, I do not give up.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce?
The Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based organization focused on helping Black businesses and underserved communities across Virginia grow, gain visibility, and access real opportunities. At its core, the Chamber exists to build connection, create pathways for growth, and support a stronger, more sustainable business ecosystem across the state.
The organization specializes in business development, entrepreneurship support, advocacy, leadership development, government contracting, workforce development, capital access, and community-centered programming. It is known for creating practical opportunities for business owners to connect, learn, grow, and be seen. Through signature events, strategic partnerships, the Virginia Black Business Directory, the Business Accelerator Program, and year-round resources, the Chamber works to support entrepreneurs at different stages of business.
What sets the Chamber apart is that it is not just focused on networking for the sake of networking. Its work is rooted in access, impact, and action. The goal is not simply to bring people together, but to connect business owners to education, visibility, partnerships, contracting opportunities, and resources that can help them move forward in a meaningful way. The Chamber is intentional about serving both individual businesses and the larger business ecosystem.
One of the things the organization should be most proud of is its growth and reach. What began as the Virginia Black Business Directory has grown into a statewide platform that now supports businesses and communities through events, programming, advocacy, and the VABCC Foundation. That evolution reflects both the need for this work and the trust the organization has built across Virginia.
What readers should know is that the Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce is a mission-driven organization committed to helping Black businesses and underserved communities access the relationships, resources, opportunities, and support they need to thrive. Whether through membership, events, programs, advocacy, or community partnerships, the Chamber’s work is centered on creating lasting impact and expanding what is possible for the people and businesses it serves.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My family makes me very happy, especially my wife and my daughter. Beyond that, what truly brings me joy is seeing people win. I am happiest when business owners are celebrating breakthroughs, when our community has access to the same opportunities as others, and when people are able to see what is possible for themselves. There is something incredibly rewarding about watching others thrive, grow, and be recognized for their value and potential. That is one of the greatest joys of this work.
