Community Highlights: Meet Jamanda Byam of Harmony Therapeutic Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamanda Byam.

Hi Jamanda, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always had a desire to become a therapist and create a space where people feel safe enough to explore their emotions, make sense of their experiences, and heal from their pasts. I attended Hampton University, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology in 2008, and later continued my education at Virginia Commonwealth University, earning my master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling in 2011.

I began my career with a mental health agency as an admissions coordinator, traveling throughout Virginia to complete psychosocial assessments for teens who required group home placement. My career then took an unexpected but incredibly rewarding turn when I accepted positions as a juvenile correctional center counselor and later as a juvenile probation officer and supervisor. I truly enjoyed working with youth and families during some of the most challenging periods of their lives. It was especially rewarding to witness the growth that occurred not only within the teens and young adults I supervised, but within their families as well.

Over time, I realized that I wanted to continue being a change agent for youth and families, but I wanted to lead with a mental health and healing-centered approach. That realization ultimately brought me back to my original passion- therapy.

Becoming an outpatient therapist allowed me to support people in a different way; not simply addressing behaviors or circumstances, but helping them understand what was happening beneath the surface. I wanted to create a kind of space where people could feel heard without judgement, unpack experiences they may have carried for years, recognize patterns that were no longer serving them, and begin creating healthier lives and relationships.

That passion eventually led me to establish Harmony Therapeutic Services. Building my own practice has allowed me to expand the vision I had when I first decided to enter this field, to provide compassionate, culturally responsive mental health care while meeting people where they are. Today, I have the privilege of working with individuals, couples, families, and young people as they navigate trauma, relationships, life transitions, emotional wellness, and personal growth.

When I look back, my career hasn’t followed a perfectly straight path, but every role has shaped the therapist and business owner I am today. From working within the juvenile justice system to sitting across from clients in the therapy room, one thing has remained consistent: I believe people can heal, grow, and create a different story for themselves when they have the right support and a safe place to do the work.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been challenges along the way. Some of the more practical ones included navigating the credentialing process with insurance companies, building a consistent caseload, learning how to effectively market my practice, and adjusting to the many responsibilities that come with being a business owner.

My greatest challenge, however, has been overcoming fear- the fear of the unknown, the fear of failure, even the fear that comes with stepping outside of what feels safe and familiar. Entrepreneurship requires a level of trust in yourself that I don’t think you fully understand until you’re in it. I’ve had to learn to make decisions without always knowing what the outcome will be and to become comfortable with not having all the answers.

Throughout that process, I’ve relied heavily on my faith. There have been moments when I’ve questioned whether I was making the right decision or wondered how something was going to work out, only to watch the pieces eventually fall into place. Those experiences have continued to reassure me that I’m in alignment with where I’m supposed to be.

I’ve also learned that success doesn’t mean the absence of challenges. Sometimes success looks like continuing to move forward despite them. Each obstacle has taught me something about myself, strengthened my confidence, and reminded me why I started Harmony Therapeutic Services in the first place. I’m still learning and growing as both a therapist and a business owner, but I’ve become much more comfortable trusting the process, taking calculated risks, and believing that I’m capable of figuring things out along the way.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Harmony Therapeutic Services?
I created Harmony Therapeutic Services because I wanted to provide a space where people can show up as they are, feel genuinely heard, and do the work necessary to heal and grow. We provide mental health services to individuals, couples, and families, with a focus on helping clients navigate anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, anger, grief, life transitions, and other experiences that can impact their emotional well being.

What I believe sets Harmony Therapeutic Services apart is our approach to therapy. I understand that walking into a therapist’s office and sharing some of the most personal parts of your life with a stranger can feel intimidating. My goal is for therapy to feel human. I want clients to know that they are sitting across from a real person, not someone who is there to judge them or simply give advice. We can have difficult conversations, unpack painful experiences, challenge unhealthy patterns, and still find moments to laugh along the way.

I’m most proud of the growth of Harmony Therapeutic Services and the trust clients have placed in the practice. What began as a vision has grown into something that allows me to serve my community in a way that feels authentic to who I am as a therapist. As the practice continues to grow, I’m intentional about expanding services while never losing the personal connection and quality of care that Harmony was built on.

Ultimately, I want people to know that you don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Sometimes therapy is about healing from the past, but it can also be about understanding yourself better, strengthening your relationships, setting boundaries, navigating change, or simply having a space that is completely yours.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I love about Richmond and the surrounding counties is the variety. You can enjoy city, suburban, or country living all within a 20-30 minute drive. As a Jersey City girl, I’ll admit the pace can sometimes feel a little slow compared to the hustle and bustle I grew up with . However, I’ve enjoyed watching Richmond grow and especially appreciate the restaurants, festivals, and community events that continue to bring new energy to the area.
