Community Highlights: Meet Jesse of Gracie Barra Chantilly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse.

Hi Jesse, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story in Virginia began shortly after I was medically retired from the United States Marine Corps. After leaving the military, I returned home to Arizona for a few years before eventually making the move to Virginia.
When I arrived, I was struggling mentally and emotionally with the effects of PTSD. I was dealing with depression, anxiety, and the challenge of finding a new sense of direction and purpose after my military service. With the encouragement of a fellow veteran, I returned to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in March 2019. That decision became an important turning point in my life.
Through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, along with getting the professional help and support I needed, I began working through many of the challenges that came with PTSD. Training gave me structure, discipline, community, and a renewed sense of purpose—many of the things I had missed since leaving the Marine Corps.
As I continued to heal and grow, I realized that I wanted to create a place where others could experience the same positive impact that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu had on my life. My son, Peter, was also a major influence in my decision to open Gracie Barra Chantilly. I wanted to make sure he had access to the training, guidance, leadership, and positive environment that I believed he needed to continue growing.
In February 2022, I opened Gracie Barra Chantilly. What began as part of my own healing journey has grown into an opportunity to serve my community, mentor others, and help people of all ages become stronger and more confident—both on and off the mats.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. Like any meaningful journey, there have been obstacles and difficult moments along the way. One of our biggest challenges was establishing ourselves in an already competitive and saturated market. By the time we opened, there were several well-established Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies in the area, including other schools within the Gracie Barra organization.
We knew that simply opening our doors would not be enough. We had to earn the trust of the community and demonstrate what made our academy different. My goal was never to imitate what others were doing, but to build a school with exceptional instruction, strong leadership, high standards, and a genuine family-oriented culture.
One of the most important decisions I made was bringing Professor Glaucia Braga from Brazil to lead our programs. She is one of the most accomplished female black belts within the Gracie Barra organization, and I knew her experience, knowledge, and leadership would make an immediate impact. With Professor Glaucia’s guidance and dedication, we were able to establish our identity and quickly distinguish ourselves within the community.
Today, our children’s program has become one of the strongest in the area. That growth did not happen overnight—it was the result of consistency, hard work, high standards, and a shared commitment to giving every student the best possible experience.

As you know, we’re big fans of Gracie Barra Chantilly. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Gracie Barra Chantilly is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy committed to providing the highest level of instruction for children and adults. We offer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, practical self-defense, physical fitness, and personal-development training for students beginning at five years old.
As the owner and operator, I am involved in nearly every part of the academy. My responsibilities include following up with prospective students, teaching children’s and adult classes, supporting student retention, overseeing daily operations, and handling the administrative side of the business. Being actively involved allows me to stay connected to our students and families and ensures that the standards we established from the beginning are maintained.
We are known for our world-class instruction and our commitment to genuine student development. What sets us apart is that we do not promote students based solely on attendance or the amount of time they have been enrolled. Promotions must be earned through measurable progress, technical ability, discipline, effort, and an understanding of the curriculum. We believe that the value of a belt comes from the work required to earn it.
I am especially proud of the success our students have achieved in competition in such a short period of time. We have had students with only six to nine months of training compete successfully against more experienced opponents, including students with higher belt ranks. Those performances reflect the quality of our instruction, the dedication of our coaches, and the hard work of our students.
More importantly, our standards apply to every student, whether they choose to compete or not. Competition is only one way to measure growth. We want every student to develop confidence, discipline, resilience, respect, and the ability to protect themselves.
I want readers to understand that we are much more than an after-school activity or a place where children are simply supervised. Families are investing in meaningful instruction and life skills that can stay with their children for years. I am always honest with parents: if their priority is receiving promotions rather than seeing real progression, we may not be the right academy for them. We maintain high standards because we believe every student deserves an education that is both valuable and authentic. That commitment to progress over recognition is what defines Gracie Barra Chantilly and allows us to stand apart.

So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
There are several ways people can work with, collaborate with, or support Gracie Barra Chantilly. For individuals and families, the best way is simply to come experience what we offer. We welcome children and adults of all experience levels who are interested in learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, practical self-defense, improving their fitness, or becoming part of a positive and disciplined community.
As a Marine Corps veteran, supporting my fellow veterans is especially important to me. I understand firsthand the challenges that can come with transitioning out of the military, including the loss of structure, purpose, and camaraderie. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu played a major role in helping me regain those things, and I want other veterans to know that they have a place with us.
That same commitment extends to our law-enforcement officers and first responders. These men and women serve our communities under tremendous pressure, and I believe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can provide them with practical skills, physical conditioning, stress relief, confidence, and a strong support system. I am always interested in finding meaningful ways to serve and collaborate with those who serve others.
We are also open to collaborating with local schools, youth organizations, community groups, veteran organizations, and businesses. These partnerships can include self-defense seminars, anti-bullying programs, youth-development events, workplace safety training, and other opportunities that allow us to share the benefits of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with the community.
Local businesses can also support us through sponsorships, cross-promotion, event partnerships, or by helping support our students and competition team. We are always interested in building relationships with organizations that share our commitment to discipline, confidence, personal growth, and community service.
People can also support us by referring friends and family, following and sharing our work on social media, or simply helping spread the word about what we are building. Every referral, partnership, and introduction helps us reach more people and continue making a positive impact both on and off the mats.
