Today we’d like to introduce you to Minister Patricia Fowler.
Hi Minister Patricia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My story started back in 1999, when I got divorced after nine (9) years. My marriage was abusive. when I got married, I had a one-year-old daughter and through the marriage I had 3 sons. Once I was finally out of my situation, I felt as I was starting my life all over again, but as a single mom of 4, with no help. I worked hard to provide for myself and my children, but at times it was very hard and frustrating. As time went on, I went to counseling to get myself together for the sake of my children. After many years of that in 2014, I was asked to speak in church about Domestic Violence and that’s where my journey started and led me to be a Certified Victims Assistant Professional and DV Advocate today. In 2023, I started my own nonprofit organization called Pure Hearts Restored, Inc. with dreams of helping other victims and survivors through educating them, praying with and for them, Christian counseling, I have connected with some other amazing Domestic Violence organizations as well. I am in the process of being part of a Domestic Violence Task Force in Prince George’s County Maryland with the Sherriff’s Office along with 4 other wonderful women who are also Advocates.
My journey is far from over. I am in the mid stages of developing it to become the person I once needed but now to be that person for others. I love helping people in any way I can. Seeing or speaking to someone who has crossed my path to hear their victory story is what makes me proud to a DV Advocate.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it has not been a smooth road. Some of the struggles includes not having enough money to take care of my children and for a period of time, I was getting help from the state. It includes dealing with severe emotional issues and trauma with my children who were deprived from their father not wanting to be in their lives or just being absent from the ages of 1, 3 and 5 until they were able to see him again at the ages of 16, 18 and 20. It came with the hardship of struggling to make ends meet, working, going to school, trying to keep a roof over our heads. It came with trying to raise boys with no male figure around to lead and guide them how boys should be raised and things they needed to hear from a male perspective. It came with negativity as far as the boys getting in trouble, going down the wrong roads and even jail. It came with me feeling guilty for years that I was not a good parent, but after rebuilding my life and relationship with God, I now know that was not the case.
Life and struggles, especially domestic violence can stay with you for a lifetime, but when you invite God into the situation, He makes things easier and better. I do not regret anything that I went through because it clearly made me who I am today and I would not trade her for anything
We’ve been impressed with Pure Hearts Restored, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Pure Hearts Restored, Inc. was developed in June of 2023 while I was in and still is a part of the Nicole L. Brown Coaching Camp. This program helped me create and start. a business, something that I never thought would happen.
You should know that Pure Hearts Restored severs the DMV area in regard to bringing education and awareness to domestic violence and sexual assault. You should know that we help serve the homeless, those re-entering the work force, those who are just coming out of domestic violence situations and need a hand.
What sets me apart from others is that although we are doing the same work, my reasons and how I work is different from others. I pour out straight from the heart and that’s what makes me stand out. I am most proud of my brand for not giving up and quitting, not worrying about what others think or when things are going slow. I’m proud to know that people know the name, and rely on me when they are asked for help.
I want the readers to know that I am here to help. I’m not here to get rich off of anyone, although doing business costs. I created books to help people understand what going through domestic violence is about and how to get help. Purchasing my books is a major way to help someone else, along with the t-shirts I sell . I want them to know that I can provide workshops on domestic violence and sexual assault, that will provide them with education and a certificate after the class is done.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Most people don’t know that I have spoken in a variety of places such as the Nation’s Capital in Washington D.C.,
That I have spoken on panels with amazing well-known people such as Dr. Mildred Muhammad, the ex-wife of the D.C. Sniper.
That I have been on many radio shows doing interviews.
