Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelby Harris.
Hi Shelby, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey began in 2020, where I had access to a space where I began creating opportunities for youth and families in my community. What started as a space for youth began quickly grew into something much bigger. I organized back to school drives, paint parties, tutoring opportunities, back to school dances, and other activities designed to give young people a safe, positive place to connect, have fun, and feel supported.
Although I eventually lost access to that space, I never lost the vision. I knew I wanted to continue creating spaces where people could come together, celebrate, connect, and pour back into the community.
Last year, I was given the opportunity to rebrand and breathe new life into an incredible space known as Mattie’s. The name carries a special meaning. Mattie Johnson, whom the venue is in remembrance, was a matriarch who loved her family and was known for doing things for both her loved ones and others around her. That spirit is at the heart of what I want Mattie’s to represent.
Every day, I strive to honor that legacy by creating an environment, centered around family, community, celebration, and connection. Whether someone is hosting a baby shower, birthday, wedding, meeting, paint party, or simply gathering love wants to gather, I want them to feel that they are stepping into a space where people matter.
Mattie’s Place is more than an event venue. It is a family based event space built on the belief that every occasion deserves to be celebrated and that community is something we should continue to nurture. What began with you that community events in 2020 has evolved into a place where families, friends, and the community can create memories together – and I am incredibly proud of how that vision continues to grow.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, the road has been smooth throughout the rebranding of Mattie’s. Like any business, there have been challenges along the way, but each one has been an opportunity to improve and strengthen the venue.
As part of the rebrand, we completed several updates, additions, and maintenance improvements to create a more comfortable, beautiful, and enjoyable experience for our guest and clients. From updating the space to adding features that enhance the overall experience, we have continued to make improvements with our customers in mind.
There have certainly been moments that require problem-solving and patience, but we have handled each challenge with ease and kept moving forward. I believe that has been one of the keys to our growth – remaining flexible, focusing on the vision, and continually finding ways to make Mattie’s Place better.

What I want people to know about Mattie’s Place is that we offer an intimate boutique – style event venue, that combines, elegance, comfort, and affordability. Our goal is to give families and other clients the experience of an upscale venue without the overwhelming price tag that often comes with it.
What truly sets Mattie‘s Place apart is the beauty of the space itself. We have intentionally created a venue that requires very little to transform into something elegant and memorable. The decor and ambience provides a beautiful foundation, allowing our clients to bring their vision to life without having to spend thousands of dollars simply making the space look special.
We offer a variety of services and enhancements, including catering, customized decor, packages, and event set up options, making it possible for clients to create a more complete experience in one place.
One of the additions I am especially proud of is Under the Stars, our full outdoor venue experience. It gives clients the opportunity to host intimate celebration outdoors, while still enjoying the same elevated, thoughtfully designed experience that Mattie’s Place is known for. It is another way to continue to think outside the box and offer our community something different.
At the heart of the brand, Mattie’s s Place is about making beautiful celebrations accessible. We want people to walk in and immediately see the possibilities – a space where it takes very little to create something truly elegant, meaningful, and memorable.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters most to me is maintaining the integrity and spirit of Mattie’s Place while continuing to grow the brand. I want to preserve what makes this space special and ensure that the meaning behind the name and the vision behind the venue remains at the center of everything we do.
It is equally important to me that Mattie’s Place remain accessible to the families and individuals in our community. I want to continue offering affordable pricing and thoughtfully designed packages that allow people to celebrate meaningful moments without feeling like elegance and quality are out of the reach.
For me, success is not simply about growing the business. It is about growing while staying true to our values, providing an exceptional experience, and making sure our clients feel that they are receiving genuine value for what they invest in their special moments.
