Today we’d like to introduce you to Stevie / Sarah McKulsky / Vogel.
Hi Stevie / Sarah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
We have similar background stories as we both began working with pregnant women through yoga. Sarah was moved to become a doula after the birth of her oldest son. She has now been supporting families for ten years. Stevie felt the calling to birthwork while witnessing the transformation from maiden to mother in her yoga classes. She has now been a doula just over a decade, as well. Both of us have invested a lot of time and resources into additional trainings and certifications in order to enhance our breadth of support.
Previously, we had solo practices in the Western Loudoun community until the beginning of 2026 when we finally aligned in partnership as Salt & Light Sanctuary. Individually, and collectively, we believe God wrote this passion on our hearts, and it was with faith that we followed through.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Birth work and living life on call is not for the faint of heart. The burnout rate is high! There are many sleepless night, missing important events, and never knowing if you’ll need to leave in a moment’s notice. Especially as mothers, having excellent support for ourselves and our families makes a big difference.
As well, witnessing birth means walking alongside families in their most ecstatic and heartbreaking moments.
We have both struggled with moments of weakness and doubt, but through strength in our partnership, strive to continue our service in a sustainable way where we can show up fully for families.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Salt and Light Sanctuary?
Salt and Light Sanctuary is a partnership of two local doulas, Sarah and Stevie, who have over 20 years of combined experience. Our mission is to support birth as sacred work—rooted in faith, guided by wisdom, and held in love. We exist to walk alongside women and families with reverence and trust, believing that Christ dwells within the birthing woman through faith, grounding her in a love that steadies, strengthens, and sustains. Our care honors the body’s God-given design and protects the space where birth unfolds naturally, peacefully, and without fear.
We support women and families through their pregnancy, birth, and postpartum experiences.
We also offer specialized services such as placenta encapsulation, Blessingway ceremonies, and Closing of the Bones ceremonies.
Our partnership is unique because women have access to the wisdom of two experienced doulas whose support style is very similar.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
We strive to lean into Biblical truth as the foundation for both our personal and professional lives.
Other resources we recommend to almost all of our clients are “The First Forty Days” book, “Real Food for Pregnancy” book, and “Nourishing Newborn Mothers” book. As well as the “Birthing Instincts” podcast.
We also frequently utilize homeopathy in our homes and with clients. Stevie is studying to be a homeopathic practitioner, and loves a book called “Humans of Homeopathy”.
