Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexus Baldwin.
Hi Alexus, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I was always drawn to creativity. I wanted to try everything—church choir, dance, cheerleading, gymnastics, horseback riding, cosmetology…you name it. Creating has always been a part of who I am. It’s what makes me, me. If I can’t create, it simply isn’t for me.
Ironically, this entire music journey started with something so simple—a 30-second Instagram story of me singing a Layton Greene song. I asked, “Should I start doing covers? Yes or no?” About 90% of people voted yes, while 10% said no. But within that 90%, I met someone who changed the direction of my life.
He saw something in me that I didn’t see in myself. He took the time to break down the gift he believed I had and offered to introduce me to a recording studio—Elevated Sounds & Visuals—and to Biggz, who’s now my engineer. At first, I turned him down. I honestly didn’t think I could do music. He respected my decision, and we both went our separate ways.
Months passed, but everywhere I looked, I kept seeing signs telling me not to give up on myself. Music kept finding me.
Truthfully, I had already given up on my original dream of working in media. I graduated from Hampton University with a degree in Broadcast Journalism right as the pandemic began. Jobs in my field were scarce, and after facing rejection after rejection, I convinced myself it just wasn’t meant to be. I eventually transitioned into accounting and government contracting. During that same season, I became a mother. Raising my son became my greatest blessing, and while motherhood became my priority, I never completely stopped dreaming.
Eventually, I reached back out and said, “Okay…I want to see what a studio session is like.”
He brought me to Elevated Sounds & Visuals, where I met Biggz. Instead of immediately putting me in the booth, he let me sit in and watch him engineer another female rapper’s session. I got to witness the creative process from start to finish, and I fell in love with it.
The following week, I came back to record my very first song, “Times Like This.”
That record came straight from my heart. It reflected exactly where I was mentally. I felt alone. I felt unheard. It was like I was screaming underwater, hoping someone would finally hear me.
Recording it wasn’t easy. I had never sung by myself in front of anyone before—only in groups. I was terrified. It took me three or four sessions just to finish the song because I was so nervous. But I kept showing up with the help of Biggz. He gave me alot of motivation to keep trying.
When I finally released “Times Like This” along with the music video, something changed inside of me. My confidence slowly began to grow. I started believing in myself. I learned how to push through fear instead of letting fear stop me.
To this day, Elevated Sounds & Visuals will always feel like home. It’s more than just a studio—it’s a family. Everyone genuinely wants to see each other win. The energy is always positive, collaborative, and full of creativity. I highly recommend the Artist development course that Biggz offers.
From there, I started performing at open mics like The Audible Asylum hosted by Creek Conyers where I was given the space to develop my stage presence without judgment. I still have the video from my very first performance there, and the difference between that nervous version of me and the performer I am today is incredible. Baby…the confidence is definitely giving now!
Today, I’m interning at Streetz Radio Station, working as a reporter with Gman Live, and continuing to build my own platform, Lex with Taste, where I interview restaurant owners and highlight local businesses while still pushing my music. I especially thank G (George Waters) for allowing me to learn from him and adding me to his team after being a student in his workshop. They’ve been very welcoming and supportive. Everything that I learned in school and artist development I’m now able to apply it thanks to him. Even though it’s only been about a month since I’ve started with GMan Live I can already tell that I’ll learn a lot. Every opportunity has reminded me that when you stop running from your calling and finally believe in yourself, doors begin to open that you never imagined.
Looking back, I’m so grateful I decided to walk back through that studio door. One “yes” changed everything.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t always been a smooth journey. Some of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as an artist have been learning how to stay consistent, even when life outside of music demanded my attention. I’ve also had to develop patience—understanding that growth takes time and that every opportunity doesn’t happen overnight. Those challenges have taught me discipline, resilience, and the importance of trusting the process, even when the results aren’t immediate.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What do I do? I’m a musician, journalist, and radio voice actress, while also pursuing opportunities in film and television. I’m best known as a rapper, singer, and reporter, combining storytelling through both music and media.
One of my proudest accomplishments so far has been landing a brand partnership with Black Girl Vitamins. What truly sets me apart is my ambition and work ethic. I’m a go-getter—if there’s something I want, I don’t wait for opportunities to come to me. I create them and go after them myself. I’m also now a contestant on VA’s first reality dating show, Match Maker VA.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I had a lot of beautiful moments, but I also experienced my share of hardships. My father served in the military and returned home with PTSD. As his mental health declined, we eventually lost him. At the time, mental health wasn’t understood or treated with the urgency it is today, and I often wonder how different things could have been if he’d received the help he needed.
Despite that loss, my mother made sure I had everything I needed and always encouraged my creativity. I was a dedicated student, a cheerleader for most of my life—which required maintaining a strong GPA—and I proudly made the Dean’s List all four years at Hampton University. I also served as President of Hampton University’s chapter of Jack & Jill and have always had a passion for giving back to my community.
Mentoring and pouring into the next generation has always been close to my heart, and it’s something I still enjoy doing today. Throughout every season of my life, I’ve been a go-getter. I’ve faced storms that could have easily knocked me off course, but my faith has always carried me through. I’m God’s child, and no matter what I’ve gone through, I’ve never stayed down for long.
