Conversations with Andrea – Volunteer At King Street Cats

Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea – Volunteer At King Street Cats.

Hi Andrea – volunteer at, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
King Street Cats (KSC) is Alexandria’s only no kill, free roaming, volunteer run cat rescue. All of KSC’s funding comes from donations. I started volunteering in 2015, initially as a caregiver taking care of the many kitties in residence. I eventually started fostering both kittens and older cats.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I would like to say it’s smooth and obstacle free but as anyone who works in rescue knows there are highs and lows. Luckily the highs outnumber the lows.

KSC gets their kitties from other overcrowded rescues in the DMV as well as those found outside by concerned citizens. We also get many requests for owner surrenders. Thanks to our wonderful donors we are able to take in some of the difficult cases that the other shelters just don’t have space for, especially when the recovery could be long. We have several wonderful veterinary partners who do all they can to assist in getting these kitties ready to have the life they deserve in a forever home.

KSC will do everything possible to give these sweet kitties the best life possible. They all deserve lots of love.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Once I started volunteering at KSC in 2015, that became my passion. I learned everything I could about caring for cats from the more experienced volunteers. I became adept at giving medicine, doing shots, giving sub q fluids, helping socialize cats and kittens to get them ready for a forever home. I served as the foster coordinator for a number of years. I was able to expand the foster program and pass on some of my knowledge to the fosters.

We have a wonderful group of volunteers at KSC who all work together for the welfare of the kitties. We have various opportunities for volunteering posted on our website (www.kingstreetcats.org) for anyone who is interested. We depend solely on donations. If someone is not able to volunteer but wants to help, they could donate/participate in our fundraisers. It’s also helpful to share our Facebook posts. I do want to note that KSC only adopts out to the metro DMV region. There are so many at risk kitties at other shelters so we stick to our local area for adoptions.
