Today we’d like to introduce you to Darryl Liechti.
Hi Darryl, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My entrepreneurial journey started long before I officially opened my first business. I’ve always loved working with my hands, solving problems, and finding ways to improve things. After graduating from Universal Technical Institute’s Collision Repair program in 2005, I returned to Williamsburg and spent years working my way up in the collision repair industry—from a body technician’s assistant to technician, team leader, and eventually learning the operational side of the business as well. Every role taught me something valuable, but it also showed me where the customer experience was falling short.
While working full-time, I began repairing vehicles for friends and family after hours. What started as a side hustle quickly grew through word of mouth. For nearly eight years, I worked nights and weekends out of rented garage space and storage units, all while dreaming of building a business that put people first. Eventually, I reached a point where I had a choice: stay comfortable or bet on myself. In 2022, I took that leap and opened Collision Correction full-time.
From day one, my vision wasn’t just to repair vehicles—it was to create a business built on honesty, transparency, craftsmanship, and customer advocacy. We intentionally chose to remain independent of insurance direct repair programs so we could always put our customers’ interests first. That philosophy has helped us earn the trust of our community and grow faster than I ever imagined.
As Collision Correction grew, I realized there were other needs in our community that aligned with our passion for quality and service. That led to launching SWAG Automotive, specializing in premium vehicle wraps, window tint, paint protection film, and commercial branding, and later Shell Shine, a professional detailing company focused on preserving and protecting vehicles. Each business serves a different purpose, but they’re all built around the same core values: deliver exceptional work, take care of people, and never stop improving.
One of the things I’m most proud of isn’t an award or a milestone—it’s the opportunity to create careers and invest in people. We’ve partnered with local vocational programs, hired apprentices, and watched young technicians grow into professionals. I believe success isn’t measured solely by the businesses you build but by the lives you impact along the way.
I’m also a firm believer that personal growth fuels business growth. Whether it’s training for a marathon, challenging myself physically and mentally, or constantly learning new skills as a business owner, I’ve found that staying uncomfortable is where the biggest growth happens. Entrepreneurship has taught me that there is no finish line—only the next opportunity to learn, improve, and serve others better.
Looking back, I’m grateful for every late night, every setback, and every risk I took. They shaped not only the businesses we’ve built but also the leader I’ve become. Looking ahead, my goal is simple: continue raising the standard in every industry we’re part of while creating something that positively impacts our employees, customers, and community for years to come.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I don’t think entrepreneurship is ever a smooth road, and mine certainly hasn’t been. Like many small business owners, I started with more determination than resources. For years, I worked a full-time job while building my business after hours, sacrificing evenings, weekends, and time with my family to pursue a long-term vision. There were plenty of moments when the safer option would have been to stay where I was.
Once I opened Collision Correction, I quickly realized that being a great technician and being a great business owner are two very different skill sets. I had to learn finance, marketing, leadership, hiring, process development, and everything in between—often through trial and error. Every mistake became a lesson, and every challenge forced me to grow.
Our industry has presented its own unique obstacles as well. Collision repair has become increasingly complex, with rapidly advancing vehicle technology, ongoing technician shortages, and insurance-related challenges that can make it difficult for customers to receive the repairs they deserve. We’ve chosen to remain an independent shop because I believe our responsibility is to our customers, not to an insurance company’s performance metrics. That path isn’t always the easiest, but it’s one I’m proud of because it allows us to advocate for proper repairs and put safety first.
As we’ve expanded into additional businesses, I’ve also learned that growth requires building systems and developing people, not just working harder. One of the biggest lessons has been that you can’t do everything yourself. Surrounding myself with a great team and empowering them has been essential to our success.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change any of those struggles. They taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of continuous improvement. Every obstacle helped shape the businesses we’ve built today, and I still approach each new challenge with the mindset that there’s always an opportunity to learn, adapt, and come back stronger.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Today I’m the owner of three businesses: Collision Correction, SWAG Automotive, and Shell Shine. While each serves a different purpose, they’re all built on the same philosophy—deliver exceptional craftsmanship, create an outstanding customer experience, and never stop improving.
Collision Correction is an independent collision repair facility specializing in safe, manufacturer-correct repairs. We work on everything from everyday commuter vehicles to luxury, exotic, and commercial vehicles. One area we’re especially known for is customer advocacy. We take the time to educate our customers, explain the repair process, and help them navigate what can often be a stressful insurance claim. We made the intentional decision to remain independent of insurance direct repair programs because we believe our responsibility is to the vehicle owner—not an insurance company’s performance metrics. That independence allows us to focus on proper repairs, transparency, and putting safety first.
SWAG Automotive specializes in premium vehicle wraps, window tint, paint protection film, ceramic coatings, and commercial branding. We love helping businesses stand out through high-quality graphics and helping vehicle owners protect and personalize their investments. Whether it’s a single work van or an entire commercial fleet, we approach every project with the same attention to detail.
Shell Shine rounds out our automotive services by focusing on professional detailing, ceramic coatings, and long-term vehicle preservation. It’s another way we’re able to help customers protect one of their biggest investments.
What I’m most proud of isn’t any single award or recognition—it’s the culture we’ve built and the trust we’ve earned within our community. We’ve had the privilege of being recognized as Coastal Virginia’s Best Car Care Facility three years in a row, York County’s Small Business of the Year, and we’ve been featured in industry publications, but the accomplishments that mean the most are seeing repeat customers return year after year, watching apprentices develop into skilled professionals, and hearing that someone chose us because a friend or family member trusted us with their vehicle.
I think what truly sets us apart is our mindset. We don’t see ourselves as simply repairing vehicles or installing wraps—we see ourselves as building relationships and solving problems. We invest heavily in our people, our processes, and continuing education because the automotive industry is constantly evolving. My goal has always been to raise the standard, whether that’s through better repairs, better customer service, or creating opportunities for the next generation entering the skilled trades. At the end of the day, I want every customer to leave knowing they were treated honestly, their vehicle was cared for properly, and they made the right choice by trusting our team.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
My biggest piece of advice is to start before you feel ready. You’ll never have all the answers, enough money, or the perfect plan. At some point, you have to trust your preparation, take the leap, and figure things out along the way. The key is to keep moving forward and be willing to adapt.
I also wish I had understood earlier that working hard and building a business are two completely different things. In the beginning, I thought if I worked more hours than everyone else, success would naturally follow. Hard work is essential, but eventually you have to learn how to build systems, develop people, delegate responsibilities, and think strategically instead of just staying busy. Your business shouldn’t depend on you doing everything yourself.
Another lesson I’ve learned is to never stop investing in yourself. Read books, find mentors, ask questions, attend training, and constantly look for ways to improve. The businesses I’ve built have grown because I’ve continued to grow as a leader. Personal development and business development go hand in hand.
Finally, don’t chase quick wins or compare your journey to someone else’s highlight reel. Build your reputation one customer, one employee, and one decision at a time. REPUTATION COMPOUNDS JUST LIKE INTEREST. If you consistently do the right thing—even when it’s the harder path—people notice, trust grows, and opportunities begin to find you.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change the long nights, the setbacks, or the mistakes. They taught me resilience, humility, and perseverance. Entrepreneurship isn’t about avoiding failure—it’s about learning from it, improving, and showing up again the next day. If you stay committed to your values, keep learning, and genuinely care about the people you serve, success has a way of following.
