Today we’d like to introduce you to Dave Lyons.
Hi Dave, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My wife Corinne and I live in Purcellville VA with our 2 boys, Ethan (8) and Colton (4). I work in medical device sales and Corinne is a registered nurse. I went back to school at West Virginia University to get my MBA in 2020/2021 with the goal of eventually being able to run our own business. Fast forward a few years and I finally felt the itch to start searching for a business. I was introduced to the Back Nine in summer of 2025 through a franchise consultant I was working with and almost immediately knew the model was perfect fit with what I had been looking for. I have strong expertise in sales and marketing and that is the main driver of The Back Nine model and also loved the concept and how it gets you out in the community doing a lot of events and sponsorships. Lastly, and most importantly I felt like this model would do really well in the Leesburg area because there are a lot of golfers and the courses are always packed. There are lots of country clubs in the area but the Back Nine is a place where golfers of all skill levels and financial levels can access the game, whether its through a membership, public tee time, or tournament/league. We have only been open for 3 months but have received a tremendous amount of support and positive feedback from the community on what we are doing. We are excited to keep growing the brand in Leesburg area along with our memberships.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No, we have learned a lot throughout this entire process. We are first time business owners, so there simply is a lot you have to learn through experience no matter what I prepared for ahead of time. We experienced several delays through the process. First, we had to find a location and that took a few months and tested our patience and ability to persevere despite others saying this would not work. Once we secured a location, we had to go through the build out process and learning to work with a general contractor and other vendors to complete the project on time and of course up the standard and vision we wanted. Lastly, we juggled all of this while working with a bank to secure the SBA loan to fund it all. One thing that stood out to me is the simple fact that you have to do a lot of negotiating and research as a business owner to make sure you are not overspending and staying within budget on the project and other expenses moving forward.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have worked in medical device sales for over 17 years, selling capital and disposable equipment to hospitals across the region. I have been very successful in multiple roles with a big focus on superior customer service and a more consultative sales approach that puts my customers at ease. There are a lot of different ways to drives sales and marketing across all industries, but nothing beats the more personal approach and truly getting to know the people you are selling to. I have the ability to understand what others want quickly and do my best to position the product or service I have to help them out.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My biggest supporter has been my wife as she has always been there for me through all the ups and downs. When you work in very competitive sales roles, it can be tough and having someone there to pick you up on the rough days and cheer you on during the big wins has been critical to my success. She has made many sacrifices including taking time off from her own career to raise our boys and I cant thank her enough for everything she has done to help us get where we are today.
