Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Face.
Hi Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I published my first collection, I Love You More Than Coffee: Essays on Parenthood in September of 2020. Two years later, I welcomed mothers into the conversation with I Love You More Than Coffee: A Guided Journal for Moms. With my second book, I am giving moms the space and opportunity to write their own motherhood stories and hopefully benefit from that process of creating and sharing. Writing about our experiences is a great way to make sense of what has happened and express feelings that we aren’t always comfortable vocalizing. Over the next few years, I am hoping to host writing workshops for moms at libraries and coffee shops. I want to remind other moms that they are never alone.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been smooth! But isn’t that where the real growth happens? I consider myself a gritty person, and when my first book was released during the pandemic, that character trait got put to the test. I was promoting a book when bookstores were closed. Imagine! The situation forced me to be creative, and I ended up partnering with several coffee shops that displayed and sold my book until the world slowly reopened. Because of the pandemic, I entered some spaces that I may not have found otherwise, and I ended up as a guest on a few podcasts and participated in virtual book clubs in the U.S. and Canada. It was an amazing experience overall.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In addition to writing professionally, I also teach English and Creative Writing. I am starting my 18th year in education and my second year teaching virtually. I love helping students improve their reading and writing skills, and I work hard to have fun with them in class and make valuable connections.
I noticed recently that the majority of my social media followers are former students. I am grateful that so many of them are still in my life, and there are some that I make a point to catch up with over lunch each summer. Perhaps my favorite coincidence is that my daughter’s best friend is the child of one of the first students I ever taught.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
My answer here probably isn’t surprising as AI has made major changes to both education and writing. It is my hope that we will always prioritize creativity and ingenuity and that we will always value the human connection between teacher and student.
