Today we’d like to introduce you to Raiken Cepa.
Hi Raiken, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
For me, coffee has always been about much more than what’s in the cup.
My love for coffee started when I was young, helping in my father’s coffee shop. I remember being fascinated by the aroma of freshly ground beans, the craft behind pulling a great espresso, and most of all, the way coffee naturally brought people together.
La Dolce Cup didn’t start with a formal business plan. It started much more simply, with me genuinely enjoying making coffee for people.
Even on a random weekend with friends, I would somehow end up behind the espresso machine, experimenting with a new recipe, creating something different for each person, and explaining the flavors and inspiration behind what I had made. I always enjoyed seeing someone take that first sip and watching their reaction. For me, that interaction across the coffee bar was just as important as the drink itself.
That curiosity is still a big part of who I am today. I love creating new recipes, experimenting with different flavors, and taking familiar drinks and turning them into something people will remember. But just as important to me is the connection with the person I’m serving.
Coffee gives me the opportunity to talk with people, explain what I’m creating, learn what flavors they enjoy, and sometimes make a drink specifically around their taste. That personal interaction is one of my favorite parts of being behind the bar.
Over time, what started as something I simply loved doing for friends became a bigger idea. I started thinking, why not bring this same personal coffee experience to weddings, celebrations, corporate gatherings, and private events?
That idea became La Dolce Cup.
I created La Dolce Cup as a mobile espresso bar centered around authentic Italian coffee, creativity, and genuine hospitality. Today, we serve events throughout Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia, bringing handcrafted espresso drinks, cappuccinos, lattes, and our own specialty creations directly to our clients and their guests.
The inspiration behind the look and feeling of La Dolce Cup comes from the relaxed elegance of the Amalfi Coast. I want our carts to feel like a small Italian café has arrived at your celebration, beautiful, welcoming, and full of life.
But at the heart of everything, La Dolce Cup is still rooted in the same thing that started it all for me: the simple pleasure of making someone a great cup of coffee, sharing the story behind it, and connecting with the person standing on the other side of the bar.
One cup at a time.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but every challenge has helped shape La Dolce Cup into what it is today.
One of the first big challenges was actually the cart itself. I built it from the ground up, and I spent countless hours researching materials, testing different ideas, and figuring out how to make it not only beautiful, but also practical. It needed to be lightweight, portable, functional, and easy to set up at all kinds of venues. There was a lot of trial and error involved, but that process taught me a lot and helped create the foundation of what we use today.
Another major learning curve has been marketing and technology. Running a business means wearing a lot of different hats. One day I’m a barista, the next I’m working on design, marketing, photography, the website, or trying to figure out some technical issue. We’ve built all of this ourselves without outside help, learning along the way how to create a brand, reach the right audience, and understand what people are really looking for when they book a coffee experience for their event.
Every event teaches me something new too. No two venues are exactly the same. Sometimes the challenge is the space, sometimes it’s power, timing, logistics, or something completely unexpected. With every event, I learn more about the market, what our clients value most, and what we can do to make the experience even better.
One thing that is very important to me, though, is that the client never feels those challenges.
Whatever may be happening behind the scenes, my job is to find a solution and make sure everything runs smoothly. I want the client and their guests to simply enjoy the moment, enjoy the interaction, and, of course, enjoy a great cup of coffee.
For me, that’s part of hospitality too. It’s not only about making a great drink. It’s about creating an experience that feels effortless for the person on the other side of the bar, even when a lot of work is happening behind the scenes.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My path to La Dolce Cup wasn’t exactly what I originally planned. I actually studied and graduated as a Radiologic Technologist, but I never ended up working in the medical field. I was born into the service industry in a way as my father has owned a coffee shop for more than 20 years, and I practically grew up there. I spent so much time helping him, watching how he worked, and especially seeing the relationships he built with his customers. I think that’s where I first realized how much I enjoyed being around people and how something as simple as coffee could bring them together.
A few years after finishing school, I got into the espresso machine sales business, working with some of the largest coffee companies in my home country. At the same time, I was working closely with my best friend in Milan, Italy, which had me traveling there two or three times a month. That period taught me so much, not only about espresso machines and coffee, but also about the business itself, customer relationships, and the Italian coffee culture. Being in Milan so often made me appreciate the Italian spirit around coffee: the simplicity, the quality, the conversations, and the way a café becomes part of everyday life.
Eventually, my wife and I came to the United States with a dream of building a better future and, hopefully, creating something of our own. Starting over in a new country wasn’t easy, but coffee remained the one constant for me. I worked as a barista at different establishments while learning the American market, meeting people, and understanding what customers here were looking for. At the same time, I never stopped experimenting at home, making coffee for friends, creating new recipes, and imagining what I could eventually build for myself.
Looking back, all of those experiences came together naturally to create La Dolce Cup. It carries a little piece of every part of my journey: growing up beside my father in his coffee shop, my experience with espresso machines, the Italian coffee culture I fell in love with in Milan, and starting a new life in America with my wife. I’m proud that something that started from a genuine love for coffee and connecting with people has now become something of our own that we get to share with others.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that people may come to you for the product, but they remember you because of how you made them feel. You can make the best cup of coffee in the world, but if there isn’t a genuine connection behind it, something is missing. Growing up watching my father with his customers and later working in the service industry myself taught me to listen, pay attention, and treat every person in front of me as more than just another customer.
I’ve always been naturally curious and social, so I enjoy asking people what they like, explaining what I’m making, and sometimes encouraging them to try something they normally wouldn’t order. Some of my favorite moments are when someone tells me, “Just make me whatever you think I’ll like.” That trust means a lot to me, and it has also inspired many of the drinks and ideas we’ve created for La Dolce Cup.
