Conversations with Zenobia Cardwell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Zenobia Cardwell.

Hi Zenobia , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My story has always been about resilience, reinvention, and finding purpose in every season of life. I’m Zenobia Cardwell, a Richmond, Virginia native, creative and community advocate. Much of my life has been spent pouring into others through my career, community involvement, and creative ventures. I’ve always believed in showing up for others and making an impact. What I didn’t realize was that one of my biggest lessons would be learning how to show up for myself.

On February 6, 2026, I underwent what was supposed to be a routine surgery, but my recovery took an unexpected turn. I developed acute blood-loss anemia and experienced a Type 2 NSTEMI—a heart attack. At just 30 years old, I found myself facing a health crisis I never imagined would be part of my story.

That experience changed my perspective. It taught me that being strong doesn’t mean you’re invincible, and being the person everyone depends on doesn’t mean neglecting yourself. With God’s grace, the support of my loved ones, and a commitment to healing, I began rebuilding physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Today, fitness has become a meaningful part of my comeback. I’ve returned to the gym, challenged my body with new fitness routines, and embraced running as I rebuild my strength and endurance. Every workout reminds me that I’m still here, still growing, and still capable of chasing goals I once took for granted.

I’m learning that a comeback isn’t always about returning to who you were before; sometimes, it’s about becoming a more intentional version of yourself. I’m still a creative, a community advocate, and a woman with big dreams, but I’m also learning to prioritize my health, honor my body, and give myself the same care I so freely give others.

My journey has reminded me that healing is about more than surviving—it’s about deciding your story doesn’t end there. I believe God gave me a comeback, and I intend to make the most of it. If sharing my story encourages even one person to advocate for their health, embrace their healing, or believe that life after a major setback can still be beautiful, then every part of this journey has a purpose.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. One of the hardest parts of this journey has been accepting that healing doesn’t happen on my timeline. I’m naturally someone who likes to stay busy, pour into others, and keep pushing toward my goals. Having my health suddenly force me to slow down was a difficult adjustment, both physically and mentally.

Experiencing a heart attack at 30 was a reality check I never expected. There’s something overwhelming about realizing that you’re young, you have so much more you want to accomplish, and suddenly your health becomes the priority. I had to learn patience with my body, give myself grace on the days when I didn’t feel like myself, and accept that I couldn’t simply push through everything the way I was accustomed to doing.

Returning to fitness has come with its own challenges. Rebuilding my strength and endurance has required me to be intentional about my progress instead of comparing myself to who I was before. Some days are more encouraging than others, but I’m learning that progress doesn’t have to be dramatic to be meaningful.

Perhaps the biggest struggle has been shifting my mindset. I’ve always taken pride in being dependable, but this experience taught me that I cannot pour into everyone else while neglecting myself. I’m learning that rest is not weakness, asking for support is not failure, and taking care of myself is just as important as showing up for others.

The road hasn’t been smooth, but it has been transformative. I’m learning to celebrate the small victories, trust the process, and give myself permission to heal without rushing the journey. My comeback isn’t about proving that nothing can stop me; it’s about recognizing what I’ve overcome and moving forward with greater intention, gratitude, and faith.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Professionally, I wear a few different hats, and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way! I work in community engagement and partnerships, where I focus on building relationships, creating meaningful programming, and connecting people with opportunities and resources. I’m also a creative entrepreneur with a background in event planning, photography, graphic design, and branding. Whether I’m developing a community initiative, planning an event, or bringing a creative vision to life, I love turning ideas into something tangible.

I’m especially proud of the work I do to create spaces and opportunities for others to thrive, particularly women, girls, and underserved communities. What sets me apart is my ability to blend creativity with strategy. I’m not just thinking about how something looks or how an event comes together; I’m thinking about its impact, who it serves, and how we can make it sustainable.

At my core, I’m a builder. I love creating things that bring people together, open doors, and leave a lasting impression. And these days, I’m learning that building a meaningful life also means making sure I’m taking care of the woman behind all the work.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I truly believe no one gets through life or difficult seasons alone. My family, my faith, and the people who have continued to show up for me have been instrumental in my journey. Experiencing a heart attack at 30 changed my perspective on so much, and I’m grateful for everyone who prayed for me, checked on me, and gave me room to heal.

A special shoutout to my therapist, who has helped me navigate the emotional side of recovery and reminded me that healing is more than physical. And to Royalty Run Club, thank you for being part of my comeback! Running has helped me rebuild my endurance, challenge myself, and celebrate what my body can do.

I’m learning that while I’ve always been the person who pours into others, it’s okay to receive that same love and support. I don’t take any of it for granted. I believe God gave me a comeback, and I intend to make the most of it—and I’m grateful for everyone helping me along the way.
