Daily Inspiration: Meet Cayce Carlisle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cayce Carlisle.

Hi Cayce, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was six years old standing on a chair watching Mom make cookies when I leaned in a little too close and my long blonde hair whirled around the KitchenAid mixer, yanking my head down. That’s when my passion for baking began. After that, I was glued to mom’s side every time she was baking in the kitchen. I learned how to decorate cakes, bake cookies, cut out dough and knead bread but my favorite was her chocolate whoopie pies. After high school I went to University for business management because I was determined to open my own bakery business. Finally, in 2015 I was ready to open a business and Mom and I started testing out products. At all of our tastings, the chocolate whoopie pies were the most popular baked good. And Little Miss Whoopie was born!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We wanted to open a brick and mortar but with the rising costs of build outs and construction, we opted to start in a food truck. The food truck we bought broke down every other week and we eventually had to restructure the company. We changed strategies and focused on catering, wholesale and events which has helped us stay in business now for ten years!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Right now, my partner and I do everything for the business from buying ingredients, baking, making, packaging, shipping, events and deliveries. We specialize in whoopie pies and have recently added our cookies.
I am most proud of continuing the business after my moms death in November 2023. We opened Little Miss Whoopie together in 2016, and she is the reason I know everything I do about baking and business. In her honor, we continue to keep Little Miss Whoopie thriving! To set us apart from others, we use all natural, organic and local ingredients. Our buttercream is an american version with just butter, vanilla bean paste and powdered sugar. We don’t use additives or chemicals.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
We love DC! The history, the architecture, the food scene! The thing I like the least would be the constant construction and traffic.
