Today we’d like to introduce you to Danielle Barnes.
Hi Danielle, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
People often assume I started a fitness business because I’ve always loved exercise. The truth is, fitness was never really the destination. It was the vehicle God used to transform my life.
Long before Thrive Fitness RVA existed, I was building a successful career in the financial services industry. By many standards, I had “made it.” The career was stable, respected, and financially rewarding. But despite the success, something was missing. I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was spending my life building someone else’s dream while ignoring the calling that God had placed on my own heart.
At the same time, I was fighting battles that very few people knew about.
For nearly a decade, addiction quietly shaped my life. From the ages of 19 to 29, I lived in a cycle of striving, shame, temporary victories, and repeated failure. I tried to fix myself through discipline, self-help, and every form of personal growth I could find. I explored meditation, breathwork, yoga, holistic wellness, energy practices, and countless methods that promised peace and freedom. Some of them offered temporary relief, but none of them addressed the deepest issue of my heart.
What I eventually discovered is that we were never designed to heal ourselves.
Real freedom came when I stopped trying to become my own savior and surrendered my life to Jesus Christ.
My faith didn’t simply change what I believed. It transformed how I viewed my body, my purpose, my relationships, and my identity. I realized that health wasn’t about achieving the perfect physique. It was about becoming a faithful steward of the life God had entrusted to me.
That revelation changed everything.
In 2015, I took what felt like an enormous leap of faith. I left the security of corporate America and converted the attached garage of our home into a small personal training studio. There were no guarantees. No investors. No elaborate business plan. Just a conviction that I was supposed to help women become stronger—not only physically, but mentally, emotionally, and eventually, spiritually.
That little garage became Thrive Fitness RVA.
Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside hundreds of women through some of life’s greatest victories and deepest struggles. I’ve celebrated weight loss milestones, but I’ve also witnessed marriages restored, confidence rebuilt, anxiety overcome, and friendships formed that extended far beyond the gym.
What I’ve learned is that very few women come through my doors simply because they want to lose weight.
They’re searching for something much deeper.
They’re searching for peace.
They’re searching for purpose.
They’re searching for connection.
They’re searching for the belief that they are enough.
As a Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Holistic Nutritionist, I love teaching women how to move well, eat well, and care for their bodies. But over the years, I began noticing something remarkable. The most meaningful transformations almost never happened during the workout itself.
They happened in the conversations afterward.
Women stayed in the parking lot.
They lingered after class.
They shared their struggles.
They prayed together.
They encouraged one another.
The community became just as powerful as the exercise.
Looking back, I no longer see my years of addiction as something to hide. I see them as preparation. God used every struggle, every failure, and every season of feeling lost to give me compassion for the women I serve today. Because I’ve experienced brokenness, I recognize it when someone walks through my door. Because I’ve experienced grace, I know that lasting transformation is possible.
My story isn’t ultimately about fitness.
It isn’t about entrepreneurship.
It isn’t even about overcoming addiction.
It’s about redemption.
It’s about discovering that the healthiest version of ourselves isn’t found through striving harder or chasing perfection. It’s found by surrendering our lives to the One who created us.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not. In many ways, the struggles have been the very thing God has used to shape both me and my business.
When I first left the financial services industry, there was a great deal of uncertainty. Walking away from a stable, well-paying career to build a business from a renovated garage wasn’t the logical choice. There were moments when I questioned whether I had made the right decision, but I knew I couldn’t ignore the calling God had placed on my life.
Like most small business owners, I’ve experienced the practical challenges of entrepreneurship—building a client base, navigating economic uncertainty, wearing every hat in the business, and balancing work with family life. There have been seasons where growth felt slow and others where I wondered if I was making enough of an impact.
But the greatest challenges have been internal.
I’m someone who dreams big. Sometimes the vision God has given me feels overwhelming. There have been moments where I’ve allowed fear to creep in—fear of failure, fear of not being enough, or fear that the vision was simply too ambitious. I’ve had to learn, over and over again, that God doesn’t call us to rely on our own strength. He calls us to be faithful with the next step.
Another challenge has been learning patience. I’m naturally driven and like to move quickly, but meaningful transformation—whether in business or in people’s lives—takes time. You can’t rush trust. You can’t rush relationships. And you certainly can’t rush God’s timing.
Ironically, many of the struggles my clients face are the same ones I’ve had to overcome myself. Feelings of inadequacy, perfectionism, unhealthy habits, and trying to earn our worth through achievement are incredibly common. Having walked through those battles has given me a level of empathy that no certification or business course could ever teach.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a Certified Personal Trainer and Certified Holistic Nutritionist, I help women improve their health through fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle coaching. While I enjoy helping women become stronger physically, I’ve found that the greatest transformations happen far beyond the workout itself.
What sets me apart is my whole-person approach. I don’t just focus on exercise or weight loss—I help women build sustainable habits, confidence, and a healthier relationship with themselves. Over the years, my business has become much more than a gym. It’s become a community where women encourage one another, share life’s challenges, and celebrate victories together.
What I’m most proud of isn’t a number on a scale or a fitness milestone. It’s seeing women discover confidence they didn’t know they had, build lasting friendships, and leave believing they’re capable of more than they imagined.
At the end of the day, my goal is simple: to help women become healthier, stronger, and better equipped to live the lives they were created to live.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
There are so many ways to collaborate. I love partnering with individuals, churches, schools, businesses, and community organizations that share a passion for helping people live healthier, more fulfilling lives.
Whether it’s personal training, nutrition education, wellness workshops, speaking engagements, or faith and fitness events, I’m always excited to create experiences that encourage lasting transformation.
If someone has a heart for helping others thrive, I’d love to start a conversation and explore how we can make a greater impact together.
