Daily Inspiration: Meet Rose Mary Bellamy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rose Mary Bellamy.

Hi Rose Mary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Let me introduce myself: my name is Rose Mary Bellamy, and I am the CEO and Co-Founder of Grandpa Foods, LLC.

Grandpa Foods is rooted in a simple yet profound desire to create something truly exceptional. Growing up, I never developed a taste for traditional condiments—a preference that continued into adulthood. However, my husband Chairman and Co-Founder, William Bellamy, has a passion for smoking meat that led him to experiment with creating a sauce that even I would enjoy.

One day, while reminiscing about our childhoods and the simple pleasure of apple butter sandwiches, inspiration struck: What if we crafted a barbecue sauce with apple butter as the base? After extensive research and recipe refinement, we proudly introduced three delightful flavors—Original, Honey, and Molasses—along with two seasoning blends: All-Purpose and No-Salt.

What Sets Grandpa Foods Apart?
It’s what we leave out. Our sauces are tomato-free, gluten-free, and made without artificial ingredients, offering a gut-friendly alternative for individuals with acid reflux or other dietary sensitivities. This unique approach has earned us national recognition with two 2025 Scovie Awards:
• 2nd Place: Molasses Apple Butter BBQ Sauce (Unique Category)
• 3rd Place: Original Apple Butter BBQ Sauce (Diet-Friendly Category)
We take great pride in offering a product that not only tastes incredible but also caters to everyone, regardless of dietary restrictions.

Certifications & Recognition
Our commitment to quality and innovation is backed by our certifications as a Service-Disabled Veteran-Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), Small, Woman-Owned, and Minority-Owned Business (SWaM), and a Virginia’s Finest brand. We are also proud members of the Virginia Specialty Food & Beverage Association.
Grandpa Foods has been featured in Roanoke Times, Bold Journey Magazine, DMV Business Magazine, and the Northern Virginia Community College Newspaper, and was recently voted a “Staff Pick” by the Friendly City Food Co-Op General Manager

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

“Grandpa Foods faces common challenges among specialty food startups, including limited access to industry-specific grant funding, rising production and packaging costs, regulatory compliance requirements, and barriers to retail distribution. As a veteran-owned Virginia-based business, additional support is needed to scale manufacturing, expand market access, and strengthen sustainable revenue channels.”

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
A Commitment to Community

Whether appearing at events like Blacksburg Fork & Cork or donating products to organizations like Johns Hopkins University, Lead Virginia, and Grace Christian School, Grandpa Foods doesn’t just sell products-they show up. Their philanthropic approach to marketing reflects the heart of their brand: serving people, not just customers.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
A major risk taken by Grandpa Foods was stepping forward into the marketplace not only as a small family business, but as a manufacturer of a growing line of specialty food products. Moving from the idea stage into production required significant commitment, including investing in compliant manufacturing processes, packaging, labeling, and food safety standards.

Bringing our products directly to consumers meant taking on the uncertainty of whether the market would respond, while also competing in a crowded food industry. Grandpa Foods accepted the financial and operational risk of scaling production, meeting regulatory requirements, and building brand trust from the ground up.

This step represented a bold transition from concept to consumer-ready manufacturing, demonstrating the company’s willingness to take risks in pursuit of long-term growth, community impact, and expansion as a veteran-owned Virginia food business
