Daily Inspiration: Meet Ruth Jay Royce Mabwe

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ruth Jay Royce Mabwe.

Hi Ruth Jay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My creative journey began in my teens through drawing and later expanded into photography, film, poetry, and artistic expression. My friend and mentor, Joe Texas, introduced me to the media world, letting me shadow him on shoots and learn by fully immersing myself in the creative process. Inspired, I eventually took a leap of faith and moved to the United States, where I founded my media company, DigIn Media.

I specialize in film and photography, creating meaningful and intentional work for businesses, communities, concerts, events, and everyday people. Over the years, I’ve worked on major events such as the Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Essence Festival, and Oppikoppi, collaborating with artists like Masego, The Internet, and FKJ. I’ve also produced impactful film projects for organizations including UVA Health, The Culpeper Chamber of Commerce, and Camp Friendship V.A.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been far from smooth, and it’s still unfolding. Pivoting and finding solutions have become part of my everyday life. Growing up with my mother as she is a single parent of six kids was not easy, but even in the challenges, there were moments of joy. Like any story, life has its ups and downs, exciting moments and devastating ones. Being on this earth is a challenge in itself, but it’s also a wonderful gift. I can’t always pinpoint every challenge I’ve faced, and continue to face, but striving to put your best foot forward, even in difficult moments, is what creates the growth and resilience that those challenges bring.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a creative being, drawn to art in all its forms, and deeply passionate about bringing visions to life, both my own and those of others, because that brings me immense joy. Connection, intention, and authenticity are at the heart of everything I do. I own a media company called DigIn Media and also work at a media agency in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where I love interacting with different people and businesses.

What sets me apart is the deep connection I have with the creative process. Every photograph, every video, starts as an idea, something that doesn’t yet exist, and I get the privilege of bringing it into reality. I truly care about every project I work on, and I pour thought, energy, and intention into making each one meaningful and impactful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t believe in luck, I believe in favor and silver linings. I believe that everything happens for a reason, and in my life, God’s favor has consistently guided and protected me. For example, I met a friend in 2016, and that connection eventually made it possible for me to move to the United States and be where I am today. I’ve learned that when we follow the fire that ignites us, we begin to notice the silver linings along the paths we’re meant to take. And when we take those paths, God’s favor turns what some might call “luck” into something much greater.
