Today we’d like to introduce you to Veniesha Davis.
Veniesha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Veniesha Davis, and I’m the owner and makeup artist behind ArtistryByVey. My journey in the beauty industry started during my junior year of high school, when I discovered my passion for makeup. I initially went to college to study criminal justice, but along the way, I realized I wanted to take a different path and explore entrepreneurship.
I later attended cosmetology school, and in 2019/2020, I opened my first salon alongside my sister and niece. What started as something completely unintentional turned into something we nurtured, grew, and eventually watched blossom into a successful business. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to service more than 1,000 clients and be part of over 100 weddings. I’ve even been blessed with opportunities to travel internationally for my work.
Beyond providing makeup services, teaching has also become a meaningful part of my journey. I’ve taught numerous makeup classes, both one-on-one and in group settings, helping women learn new techniques and feel more confident in their abilities. One thing I’ve especially enjoyed creating is a group class experience that women can enjoy with their friends. I like to describe it as a sip-and-paint, but for makeup! It’s a fun, interactive way for women to get together with their homegirls, learn something new, and enjoy an experience centered around beauty and bonding.
Taking a leap of faith on myself has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Makeup has allowed me to be part of some of the most important moments in people’s lives, and I don’t take that responsibility lightly. Whether I’m preparing a bride for her wedding day, working with a longtime client, or teaching someone how to apply their own makeup, I love being able to create experiences that leave women feeling beautiful and confident. Every client, every wedding, and every class has played a role in shaping me into the woman and entrepreneur I am today.
Currently, I’ve taken a step back from regular makeup appointments while continuing to service my longtime clients and fulfill my bridal commitments. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve developed a stronger desire to challenge myself, explore new interests, and continue growing beyond what I already know. I’m currently pursuing my education in health science, with plans to attend law school afterward.
My journey has taught me that success doesn’t have to follow one path. I’m proud of what I’ve built with ArtistryByVey, from servicing clients and traveling for weddings to teaching women and creating spaces where they can connect through beauty. I’m equally excited about what’s ahead. I believe in giving yourself permission to evolve, pursue new dreams, and never limit yourself to just one version of who you can become.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, my journey has been a pretty positive one, and I’m grateful for how everything has unfolded. Of course, there have been challenges along the way. One of the hardest parts was finding a team of women who shared the same vision as us. We wanted to create more than just a place where people came to work; we wanted to build a community centered around growth, support, and women uplifting one another. Finding people who genuinely shared those same values and goals wasn’t always easy, but it taught me a lot about leadership, patience, and the importance of having the right people around you. Through it all, I’ve learned that building a business isn’t just about the services you offer; it’s also about the culture you create and the people you grow with.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a professional makeup artist specializing in soft glam, and what I’m most proud of is myself and everything I’ve been able to accomplish through ArtistryByVey. When I look back at where I started and everything I’ve built, I’m proud that I took a chance on myself and continued to show up for my business.
I can’t necessarily say there is one specific thing that sets me apart from other artists, but I do know the experience I create for my clients is important to me. I want every woman who sits in my chair to feel comfortable, welcomed, and at home. As women, we spend so much time and energy maintaining ourselves, and those appointments should be an experience we can enjoy rather than another thing on our to-do list. I want my clients to feel like they can relax, be themselves, and leave feeling beautiful inside and out. For me, it’s about more than makeup; it’s about creating a space where women feel seen, comfortable, and cared for.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My biggest piece of advice is to show up to networking events! My sister hosts networking events, and I’ve seen firsthand how valuable they can be for connecting with other entrepreneurs, professionals, and people in the corporate world. You never know who you’ll meet or what opportunities can come from simply being in the right room. I also believe in always being kind and genuine toward people because you truly never know who someone is, who they know, or how your paths may cross in the future. Build genuine relationships, be open to learning from others, and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Sometimes, one conversation can open a door you never knew existed.
