Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin Cornett Wilcox.
Hi Caitlin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve always been drawn to art and photography, but it was my high school journalism/yearbook class that truly made me fall in love with being behind the camera. I loved documenting real moments and telling stories through images.
What started as photographing friends, families, and local events gradually evolved into a full-time wedding photography career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think any entrepreneurial journey is completely smooth, and mine certainly hasn’t been. Building a business comes with its share of uncertainty, long hours, and moments where you’re learning as you go. Beyond business itself, life has a way of presenting unexpected challenges, whether personally or professionally, and those experiences inevitably shape the way you approach your work.
What I’ve learned over the years is that setbacks often become opportunities for growth. Some of the lessons that have had the greatest impact on my business came from seasons that didn’t go according to plan. While I wouldn’t necessarily choose every challenge I’ve faces, I can appreciate what they taught me about resilience, adaptability, and perseverance.
I’ve found that success isn’t about avoiding difficulties; it’s about how you respond to them. There is always something valuable to learn, even in the moments that feel discouraging at the time. That perspective has helped me continue to grow, both as a business owner and a person.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Caitlin Wilcox Photography?
Caitlin Wilcox Photography is a wedding photography company based in Virginia, serving couples throughout Virginia, Washington, D.C., and destinations beyond. My husband, Devon, and I work together as a husband-and-wife team, documenting weddings through a blend of digital, film, and drone photography.
Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of photographing more than 300 weddings, but what continues to inspire me is the responsibility that comes with preserving such meaningful moments. While we certainly create beautiful portraits, our work extends beyond documenting a single day. We are preserving memories, relationships, and family history.
I would say we’re known for creating images that feel both timeless and authentic. Our approach blends the elegance and intentionality of editorial photography with the emotion and spontaneity of documentary storytelling. We believe couples shouldn’t have to choose between beautiful portraits and genuine moments; the most meaningful wedding collections contain both.
What sets our brand apart is our focus on legacy. In a world where so much is created for immediate consumption, we’re deeply interested in creating photographs that will still matter decades from now. We often think about our work not only from the perspective of the couple in front of the camera, but also from the perspective of future generations who will one day look back on these images. That philosophy influences everything we do, from the way we photograph a wedding day to our emphasis on heirloom albums and printed artwork.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is that we’ve built a business that reflects our values. We’ve intentionally created an experience that feels personal, thoughtful, and relationship-driven while never losing sight of the artistry involved. At the end of the day, we want our couples to walk away with more than beautiful photographs. We want them to have a visual legacy that becomes more meaningful with each passing year.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
There are certainly people who have encouraged, supported, and influenced me throughout my journey, but it’s difficult to point to any one person as the defining influence behind my success. Instead, I’ve always viewed growth as the result of many people, experiences, and lessons accumulated over time.
I’ve always believed there is something to learn from every person we meet and every experience we have. Some lessons come from fellow photographers, while others come from clients, friends, family members, business owners, educators, and even complete strangers. Every conversation, challenge, success, and setback has the potential to teach us something if we’re willing to pay attention.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of my husband, Devon, who has been a tremendous source of encouragement and has played an important role in helping our business grow. I’m also deeply grateful to the couples and families who have trusted me with their stories over the years. Their faith in my work is something I never take for granted.
More than anything, I believe we are all shaped by the people we encounter and the experiences we live. Every chapter contributes something valuable to our perspective, our work, and who we become.
