Today we’d like to introduce you to Derrick Scott.
Hi Derrick, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into fitness really started with a passion for helping people become stronger—not just physically, but mentally too. I worked at Bally Total Fitness when I was 18 and cleaned for 6 months before getting certified and training immediately after. I was there for 5 years before working at One life Fitness for another 5 years. I’ve always believed fitness can impact so much more than how you look. It affects your confidence, your discipline, your stress levels, and how you show up in everyday life.
Over time, that passion turned into DScott’s FitCamp. I started training in parks, homes, and private gyms after I left One Life. I started small and just focused on getting people results and creating an environment where people actually felt comfortable working out. As the business grew, so did my vision. I eventually moved into smaller space (550 sq ft) then into a bigger space(1200 sq ft), built a team, became more involved in the community, and started looking at fitness from a much more holistic perspective.
Today, we focus heavily on strength and conditioning, but we also talk about the things that happen outside of the gym—mindset, nutrition, sleep, stress management, and overall lifestyle. Most of the people I work with are busy professionals who have careers, families, stress, and real-life responsibilities, so I realized a long time ago that just telling somebody to “work out and eat better” wasn’t enough.
It definitely hasn’t been a straight line. I’ve had to learn business, marketing, leadership, communication, and plenty of lessons through trial and error. But that’s also what has made the journey rewarding. What started as me simply training people has turned into something much bigger. Now I get to build relationships, develop coaches, work within my community, and hopefully make an impact that goes beyond the four walls of the gym.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not a smooth road, but I think that’s part of what made the journey worth it. Owning a business will humble you pretty quickly. There have been times when business was great and times when I questioned whether I was doing everything right.
One of my biggest struggles was learning that being a good trainer and being a good business owner are two completely different things. I had to learn marketing, sales, finances, leadership, hiring, client retention, how to build systems, and delegate instead of trying to do everything myself.
There were also plenty of sacrifices behind the scenes that people don’t see—the early mornings, long days, financial risks, losing clients, making mistakes and having to adjust. As the business grew, I had to grow with it.
But I think those struggles helped shape what DScott’s FitCamp is today. I’m still learning, still making adjustments and definitely don’t have everything figured out. I’ve just gotten better at understanding that challenges are part of the process, and you keep building anyway.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We focus on helping everyday people—especially busy professional women—become stronger, healthier, and more confident while creating habits they can actually maintain long-term.
We specialize in small-group strength and conditioning, with an emphasis on progressive strength training, functional movement, endurance, mobility, and overall health. But what really separates us is that we don’t believe fitness starts and stops with a workout. Our approach focuses on five major areas: mindset, sleep, stress management, movement, and nutrition. You can give someone a great workout, but if the other areas of their life are constantly working against them, it becomes much harder to create lasting results.
I think one of the things we’re known for is meeting people where they are. Everyone isn’t walking into the gym already in shape or confident. We work with people at different fitness levels, limitations, and stages of life, while still challenging them to become stronger than they were yesterday. There’s accountability, structure, coaching, and a real sense of community.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of what DScott’s FitCamp has grown to represent. It’s not about having the biggest gym or the fanciest equipment. It’s about the experience individuals have when they walk through our doors and the results they create over time. I’ve watched clients lose significant weight, gain strength, improve their confidence, manage stress better, and accomplish things physically that they never thought they could do.
Ultimately, I want people to know that we’re trying to bridge the gap between simply “working out” and actually living a healthier lifestyle. We want our clients to leave stronger physically, but also better equipped mentally to handle life. That’s the type of impact I want DScott’s FitCamp to continue making in our community.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Im a huge believer in the bible. I couldn’t do this without the true God, Jehovah. I also like business and mindset books such as “Who moved my cheese,” “Think and grow rich,” “The slight edge,” And any other “habit” book. The mind doesn’t care what you put in it but whatever you put in it HAS to come out.
