Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Ardron.
Hi Kara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My first exposure to weddings came in college when I picked up a catering job through the deli where I was working for the summer. It was a backyard wedding outside Charlottesville, and I remember thinking, *I want to be a part of this somehow.* There was something about the energy of the day that stuck with me.
After graduation, though, I took a different path and started working in public radio. My mom had been a journalist, so I kind of fell into the field. I’ve always loved writing and storytelling, but I quickly realized investigative journalism wasn’t the right fit for me. What I loved most were the human-interest stories—the afternoons spent sitting at someone’s kitchen table, listening to their experiences and finding meaningful ways to tell them. At the same time, I was covering health, which appealed to my analytical side, but I found myself craving a more creative outlet.
That led me to start second shooting weddings on the weekends while building a small photography business around adventure sessions in Shenandoah National Park. The first time a couple hired me to hike to the top of Stony Man Mountain for sunrise photos, everything clicked. I realized I could combine the things I love most: being outdoors, staying active, telling honest stories through photographs, and building a business from the ground up.
As my business grew, I started offering adventure elopements before they were as common as they are today and became one of the early photographers specializing in Shenandoah National Park elopements. When COVID reshaped the wedding industry in 2020, demand for intimate weddings and elopements exploded, and I was able to transition into photography full-time.
Looking back, it feels like all of those seemingly unrelated experiences—storytelling in journalism, my love of the outdoors, and my analytical side—came together to create the business I have today.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, I don’t think anyone’s road in business is ever completely smooth. I’ve been doing this for a decade, and I still have moments every year where I wonder if my calendar will fill. Entrepreneurship requires constantly adapting, paying attention to what people need, and making sure you’re connecting with the right audience. Marketing is a huge part of running a business, and if you stop evolving, it’s easy to get left behind.
One of my biggest ongoing challenges has been avoiding burnout. I never forget that photography is a luxury service, and during economic uncertainty, people may choose less expensive options or decide not to invest at all. Because of that, I’ve always felt a responsibility to make the most of the seasons when demand is strong and build a foundation that can carry me through slower seasons.
That mindset has led to some incredibly busy stretches, especially during peak months like October. There are years when balancing client work, marketing, and the rest of life feels overwhelming. But I’ve also learned that building a sustainable business means being intentional: recognizing opportunities when they come, preparing for challenges when they inevitably arrive, and continually finding ways to grow without losing sight of why I started in the first place.
We’ve been impressed with Kara Leigh Creative, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Kara Leigh Creative is a Virginia wedding and elopement photography studio for couples who want a wedding day that actually feels like them.
I specialize in Virginia elopements, Shenandoah National Park adventures, micro weddings, and intimate celebrations throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether you’re hiking to a mountain overlook at sunrise, exchanging vows somewhere meaningful, or celebrating with your favorite people, my goal is to document the experience in a way that feels honest, emotional, and completely you.
I’m not the photographer who wants you to spend your wedding day standing in awkward poses or repeating moments over and over for the camera. I’m there to help you have an incredible experience first, then preserve the moments that naturally happen along the way. The laughs, the happy tears, the nervous excitement, the quiet moments you didn’t even realize were happening.
My background is actually in journalism, which is a huge part of why I approach weddings the way I do. I’ve always been drawn to people’s stories and the little details that make them unique. Photography became the perfect combination of everything I love: storytelling, creativity, being outdoors, and connecting with people.
After more than a decade photographing weddings, I’m most proud that I’ve built a brand around doing things differently. I work with couples who don’t want a cookie-cutter wedding experience and who value photographs that feel like art while still feeling real.
At the end of the day, I want you to look back at your photos and not just remember what your wedding looked like, but exactly what it felt like.
What makes you happy?
What makes me happy are the moments where I feel completely present—usually when I’m experiencing something beautiful, challenging, or deeply connected.
I love hikes with hard ascents and incredible views. Some of my favorite memories are hiking to Gullfoss Falls in Iceland, climbing the Nose in Guatemala, and completing the Skyline Trail at Mount Rainier. There’s something about working hard physically while also being surrounded by something awe-inspiring that makes me feel alive. Those moments where you’re tired, a little uncomfortable, and completely amazed by what you’re seeing are some of my favorites.
I also love a good romance novel with witty banter that makes me laugh out loud and stay up way too late reading. I love being transported into another world and getting completely absorbed in a story.
At home, it’s the simple things. Lying on my bed surrounded by my four dogs is one of those moments where I think, *this is the good life.* It’s crowded and ridiculous, but it’s also exactly what I love.
And my kids are at that age where they’re becoming more independent, so I really treasure the quiet moments at the end of the day when I still get to lay with them while they fall asleep. I love those few minutes after they’ve drifted off, when I’m still awake reading my Kindle and they’re curled into me, completely comfortable and safe. Those small, ordinary moments are the ones I know I’ll miss someday.
