Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges I have faced as a business owner has been learning how to grow while still maintaining quality, consistency, and balance. In the early stages of building my firm, I had to wear every hat — serving clients, managing operations, training staff, bringing in new business, and making strategic decisions all at the same time. As the firm grew, I had to learn how to delegate, build systems, and trust my team while still protecting the standard of service our clients expect.
Another challenge has been entering spaces where there are not many people who look like me or have taken the same path. As a Black woman CPA and business owner, I have had to be intentional about proving my expertise, advocating for my firm, and creating opportunities that may not have been readily available. Those obstacles pushed me to become more confident, more resourceful, and more committed to building a firm that serves organizations with excellence.
Like many entrepreneurs, I have also had to navigate uncertainty — changes in the economy, client needs, staffing, technology, and the accounting profession overall. Each challenge has taught me the importance of adaptability, resilience, and staying focused on the bigger mission. Instead of seeing obstacles as setbacks, I try to view them as opportunities to strengthen the business, improve our processes, and become a better leader.
We’ve been impressed with Overhead Solutions Group, PLLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My work focuses on helping nonprofit organizations and mission-driven businesses strengthen their financial systems, improve compliance, and make more informed decisions. Through Overhead Solutions Group, I provide accounting, audit, tax, and advisory services designed to help organizations stay organized, meet funding and reporting requirements, and better understand their financial position.
A major part of my work is supporting nonprofits that manage grants, government funding, and complex reporting requirements. Many organizations are doing meaningful work in the community but may not have the internal financial infrastructure needed to keep up with compliance, audits, budgets, and funder expectations. My role is to help bridge that gap by providing practical financial guidance, creating stronger processes, and helping leaders feel more confident about the numbers behind their mission.
Beyond the technical work, I see my role as a partner and problem solver. I want clients to feel supported, informed, and empowered — not overwhelmed by accounting or compliance. The goal of my work is not just to prepare reports or complete filings, but to help organizations build a stronger foundation so they can continue serving their communities with impact.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Risk-taking has been a major part of my journey as a business owner. Starting and growing Overhead Solutions Group required me to step outside of my comfort zone, trust my vision, and make decisions without always knowing exactly how things would turn out. Whether it was investing in the business, hiring help, pursuing larger clients, or expanding into more complex services, each step required faith, strategy, and the willingness to move forward even when there was uncertainty.
One of the biggest risks has been learning to grow beyond what I could do alone. In the beginning, it can feel safer to handle everything yourself, but real growth requires building a team, training staff, and learning how to delegate. That shift takes trust — trust in your processes, trust in your team, and trust in your ability to lead. Taking that risk has allowed the firm to serve more clients while continuing to improve the quality and consistency of our work.
For me, risk-taking does not mean making careless decisions. It means being willing to bet on yourself, prepare as much as possible, and take action even when the outcome is not guaranteed. Each risk has helped me become more confident, more adaptable, and more committed to building a firm that creates lasting impact for the organizations we serve.
