Exploring Life & Business with Meghan Freeman of Abundant Life Partners

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Freeman.

Hi Meghan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Born and raised just outside Los Angeles, I was familiar with the world of therapy even as an adolescent 30 years ago. I knew going into college that I wanted to work in psychology, and I also knew I wanted an experience vastly different from the world I came from. I found it at Washington and Lee University, a gorgeous campus in the small town of Lexington, Virginia.

Despite the culture shock, I thrived there. I was active across campus, from the Student Admissions Committee to Chi Omega, Peer Counselors, Resident Advisors, and more. I majored in Psychology and Philosophy, intending to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

That plan changed when I met my now-husband, Tyler, a cadet at Virginia Military Institute next door. We married the day after I graduated and headed straight to Quantico, where Tyler was beginning his career as a Marine Corps officer. The following year the Marine Corps brought us back to California, where Tyler was stationed at Camp Pendleton.

Recognizing that a PhD was not compatible with military life, I pivoted to clinical social work and earned my Master of Social Work from San Diego State University in 2010. At the time, I was seven months pregnant with our first child, and Tyler was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I committed to staying home with our daughter and using my degree to support military families in a volunteer capacity. I was active in spouse organizations, and when we moved back to Virginia, I founded the Yorktown chapter of Stroller Warriors, a running club for military spouses. During this time, we had our second and third children.

After about six years as an infantry officer, Tyler decided to pursue a career in dentistry. With him back in school, I went back to work, earning my license while working in intensive in-home services and overnight shifts at the local psychiatric hospital.

When I became pregnant with our fourth, I realized overnight shifts would not be sustainable. So in February 2017, the month she was born, I started my private practice, Abundant Life Partners.

Over nearly 10 years, Abundant Life Partners has grown to more than 80 employees, with seven physical locations and virtual care throughout Virginia. We remain clinician-owned and clinician-led, which is rare for a practice our size. We are deeply committed to our values and to our mission of making mental health care accessible.

These days I spend much more of my time behind the scenes on the business side, and I genuinely love the people I have the privilege of working with. On the personal side, we had a fifth child somewhere in there, Tyler continues to serve as an active-duty Navy dentist. Our children are active in athletics, so I spend most free time at youth sports events.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I married my husband, he told me plainly that he doesn’t believe in “comfort-based decisions.” That has proven true in business too. It has not been a smooth road, and there have been many challenges.

On the business side, compensation was one of my biggest. Figuring out a sustainable model for an insurance-based, W-2 practice, and then communicating it clearly and confidently to my team, was a long process.

The intersection of technology and mental health continues to be a challenge as well. We’re always looking for tools that fit the nuances of a deeply personal field, and most weren’t built for it.

When you genuinely care about people, and you have more than 80 employees, thousands of clients and their families, and your own family as well, every day comes with tension. Some challenges we can change. The rest we learn to accept, and then we improvise, adapt, and overcome.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Abundant Life Partners?
Abundant Life Partners (ALP) is a therapist-founded, therapist-led outpatient mental health practice established in 2017 by Meghan Freeman, LCSW. Operating across approximately eight locations in Virginia including Williamsburg, Richmond, Newport News, and Madison, alongside statewide telehealth, ALP provides comprehensive mental health care for individuals, children, teens, couples, and families.

What We Do & Our Offerings

Integrated Care Under One Roof: ALP combines psychotherapy (individual, child/teen, couples, and family counseling) with psychiatric medication management provided by skilled behavioral health nurse practitioners.

What Sets Us Apart

Whole-Family, Multidisciplinary Care: Bringing therapists, nurse practitioners, and psychologists together under one collaborative roof to serve the whole person and the entire family.

A Clinician Culture Built for Real Life: A flexibility-first operational model that prioritizes clinician well-being and stability, ensuring long-term consistency and better client outcomes.

Accessibility Backed by Infrastructure: A robust insurance-based model (accepting major commercial plans, Medicare, and managed Medicaid) paired with telehealth options, diverse clinical teams, and a customized client-matching process

What We Are Known For & Our Core Values

Kindness and Generosity: The practice emphasizes grace, empathy, and accessibility, offering pro bono options, reduced fees, and flexible support when clients navigate insurance or financial challenges.

Service to the Community: Partnering with local healthcare professionals, schools, churches, gyms, and community organizations to promote emotional and spiritual wellness beyond office walls.

Honor & Integrity: Upholding strong moral principles, owning mistakes with humility

Creating Strong Relationships: Fostering deep, supportive relationships both within the team and with the community. Referrals and word of mouth are our primary method for reaching clients as well as new employees.

Quality: As we grew, maintaining clinical quality was paramount. We have a well-developed career growth trajectory, supervision program, and compliance arm dedicated to ensuring that our work remains high quality.

Above all, ALP is most proud of its culture of genuine care (“We genuinely care” is our mantra!), ensuring that both clients and clinicians are supported personally, professionally, and emotionally.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
In some ways, I wish I had thought bigger from the beginning. I had no vision of scaling the way we have, so I didn’t initially build the practice with higher volume in mind, and we’ve had to rebuild systems that worked fine at a smaller size.

At the same time, I’m glad I heeded the wisdom of doing the next right thing. Staying focused on the next small step kept me from getting overwhelmed or overinvested. That conservative approach forced me to learn every aspect of the business, and it’s why we grew sustainably.

So my advice is to hold both. Take the next right step, but every so often ask yourself, “Would this still work if we were ten times the size?” You don’t have to build for that yet. You just want to avoid building something you’ll have to tear down.
