Today we’d like to introduce you to Mihyang Joo.
Mihyang, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have spent much of my career teaching and mentoring young musicians, and through those experiences I realized that music education could go far beyond performances, competitions, and awards. Over time, I became increasingly passionate about helping students understand that music also has the power to comfort, heal, and bring communities together.
That belief eventually led me to found Music For All, a student-led nonprofit organization based in Northern Virginia. What began as a small volunteer effort gradually grew into a larger organization involving students from multiple school districts who share a passion for both music and service. Through Music For All, students organize and perform volunteer concerts at nursing homes, hospitals, schools, and community events to bring encouragement and joy to others through music.
One of our most meaningful experiences has been partnering with Inova Hospital through its Art and Healing Program. Our students performed volunteer concerts for patients, families, and healthcare workers, and the student leadership team also independently organized a fundraising concert in support of the program. Watching students use their talents to positively impact others has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey as an educator and mentor.
Beyond music itself, I care deeply about helping students grow into compassionate and confident leaders. Through community service, mentorship, and collaboration, students learn that their talents can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Collectively, our members have contributed more than 1,600 volunteer service hours.
Balancing teaching, leadership, family responsibilities, and community work has not always been easy, but those experiences have strengthened my belief in the importance of building supportive and connected communities. I feel grateful to continue creating opportunities for students to grow not only as musicians, but also as thoughtful young leaders who use their gifts to serve others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges has been managing time and balancing the many moving parts of Music For All. As the organization has grown, so have the programs and responsibilities. In addition to nursing home performances, we now collaborate with hospital programs and are currently developing an audiobook project, so coordinating schedules and organizing events across different initiatives has been one of the hardest parts.
Another challenge has been finding the right balance between running meaningful community programs and supporting each student individually. Many students are balancing academics, competitions, and busy personal schedules, so I always want their experiences with Music For All to feel inspiring and rewarding rather than overwhelming.
For me, one of the most meaningful responsibilities is helping students grow beyond music. Although Music For All is student-led, we also work closely with professional mentors and an advisory team to guide students in developing leadership, confidence, teamwork, and a sense of purpose. I try to help students not only participate in service, but also build their own stories and grow in a genuine and lasting way through these experiences.
Despite the challenges, watching students become more compassionate, confident, and supportive of one another has been the most rewarding part of the journey.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Music For All?
Music For All is a student-led music and leadership organization based in Northern Virginia, supported by professional mentors and an advisory team. Our mission is to use music as a way to inspire leadership, connection, and meaningful community engagement.
Through our partnership with Inova Hospitals, our students provide volunteer performances and participate in various community outreach and volunteer initiatives, including fundraising efforts supporting hospital arts and healing programs.
Music For All also supports local public school events by providing volunteer accompanists and student performers for concerts, competitions, and educational activities. In addition, our students visit nursing homes on a regular monthly basis to bring comfort, connection, and joy to senior residents through music and personal interaction.
What makes our organization unique is that students actively lead and organize projects while receiving mentorship and guidance from experienced educators and professionals. This allows students to grow not only as musicians, but also as leaders, collaborators, and compassionate members of the community.
We are most proud of creating opportunities for students from different schools and backgrounds to work together through music, leadership, and service while making a positive impact in the community.
What are your plans for the future?
In the future, I hope to continue expanding Music For All into a larger platform that combines music, mentorship, and community service.
One of our current projects is a monthly audiobook program that is now in production. While our live performances currently reach local seniors and hospital patients in person, audiobooks and recorded performances allow us to overcome limitations of time and location. Through this project, we hope to reach many more seniors and patients while creating meaningful emotional connections through music and storytelling. It also gives students opportunities to contribute through narration, recording, editing, and other creative skills beyond performance.
I also plan to continue organizing benefit concerts that provide dedicated student musicians with more performance opportunities while raising funds to support programs such as the Art and Healing Program through our hospital partnerships.
Another goal is to continue expanding our chamber ensemble program so students from different ages and backgrounds can collaborate and share music together more actively within the community. Along with that, I hope to strengthen our mentorship program by connecting advanced students with younger musicians, helping students develop leadership, confidence, and teaching experience through service and collaboration.
Ultimately, I hope Music For All can continue growing as a community where students use their talents not only to grow as musicians, but also to bring comfort, connection, and support to others through the arts.
