Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzie Q Grumko.
Hi Suzie Q, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I spent over 30 years in the wine industry, both in the US and the UK. After early retirement, I learned about the co-op and new I wanted to be a part of a store that shared my values. I started as the wine buyer, and when the previous General Manager moved on, the board appointed me as his replacement.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Learning a new industry has been interesting. I have learned new skills, from writing a budget to dealing with local farmers and producers. It is a great feeling knowing that the work we do here has a positive impact on the local economy. The community aspect is so important, being so much more than just another grocery store.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Fredericksburg Food Cooperative, Inc?
We are a community-owned business. We are owned by the people of Fredericksburg. We concentrate on local, organic and otherwise healthy products. We have a deli/kitchen with products made from scratch.
We work with local farmers and producers. Last year more than 22% of our sales were from local vendors. We listen to our owners and shoppers. We donate to local non-profits via our Carrot Coin program. When customers bring in reusable totes and jars, we donate 10c per item.
We center environmental sustainability in everything we do. Our events are all zero-waste. We have a team of volunteers who turn old t-shirts into reusable shopping totes. We do not offer disposable cutlery, instead using real silverware, which we encourage customers to return.
We sanitise jars for people to reuse in the bulk department.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I’ve learned that everything is easier when you operate as part of your community. When you pay attention to the needs of the people who support you, everybody wins. None of us can do very much alone but when we work together we can truly make a difference.
