Exploring Life & Business with Tanika Mann of Tanika Mann and Associates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanika Mann.

Hi Tanika, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I think about my story, the word that comes to mind is restoration.
My faith is of the utmost importance in my life because I have seen how God has carried me through seasons of heartbreak, disappointment, uncertainty, and transition. I have experienced a great deal of pain, but I am grateful that those experiences did not make me bitter. Instead, they strengthened my faith, developed my character, and helped shape the woman I am today.

Growing up, I considered myself an average student. After graduating from high school, I felt lost and uncertain about what I wanted to do with my life. At one point, I planned to attend Job Corps, but before moving forward with that decision, I received a call from Walmart letting me know that I had been hired.

While working at Walmart, I began attending community college. I had always known that I wanted to be involved in business, although I was not yet sure what path I wanted to take. When choosing my courses, I intentionally took my accounting classes first because they sounded interesting. I quickly fell in love with accounting and with learning how businesses operate.

After community college, I transferred to Virginia State University, and that became a pivotal season in my life. First and foremost, my relationship with God changed, and I matured both spiritually and personally. VSU also introduced me to professional skills and environments that I had never been exposed to before. I learned about business etiquette, networking, résumés, professional conferences, and even the importance of having a business card. Before then, I had very little understanding of how to navigate the corporate world. At VSU, I began to see myself differently and was gradually shaped into a professional.

That growth eventually helped me secure an internship with Ernst & Young, one of the Big Four accounting firms. Entering corporate America was a major accomplishment, but the transition was not always easy. Early in my career at KPMG, I was told that I used too many colloquialisms when I spoke. I had never even heard that word before. That experience made me increasingly aware of the cultural differences I was navigating and the ways I was expected to adapt.

At times, I struggled with corporate culture and with feeling as though I did not quite fit in. Still, I continued to learn, grow, and advance. I began my career with KPMG in Tysons Corner and later transferred to the firm’s New York office. After that, I joined Deloitte and eventually became a senior tax accountant in Charlotte.

Although I was building a successful corporate career, entrepreneurship had already begun to take root in my life. During one particularly demanding busy season, I stayed up all night preparing for a small-business event where I planned to sell T-shirts. Looking back, that season reminds me of how spontaneous, creative, and full of faith I was. I was willing to try new things, build from what I had, and believe that something could grow even when I did not have every detail figured out.

That was also the season when Tanika Mann & Associates was born. At one point, I was selling cakes, operating a kiosk in the mall, making T-shirts, writing a book, and preparing tax returns. I was constantly creating and exploring different ways to use my gifts. I did not have a perfect business plan, but I had faith, energy, and a willingness to begin.
As my tax and accounting work became busier, I eventually stopped selling T-shirts and cakes. However, Tanika Mann & Associates continued. What began as one of several entrepreneurial ventures became the business that persisted and grew.

During my corporate career, I tried to convince myself that becoming a partner at a major accounting firm was what I wanted because that seemed like the natural definition of success within the industry. Deep down, however, I knew that was not the future I truly desired. I did not yet have a clear picture of what I was called to do, but I knew I did not want to keep forcing myself into a path that did not feel authentic.

Not long after I joined Deloitte, the COVID-19 pandemic began, and I was laid off. Surprisingly, I was happy. I remember feeling relieved and free. At that moment, I felt as though I would never have to work another traditional W-2 job again. The layoff did not create the entrepreneur in me; it gave me the freedom to fully step into something that had already been developing.

That freedom did not mean the road would be easy. Entrepreneurship has stretched me financially, emotionally, professionally, and spiritually. I have made mistakes, experienced uncertainty and disappointment, and faced lessons that no classroom or corporate position could have taught me. I had to learn how to manage clients, navigate inconsistent income, set boundaries, value my expertise, make difficult decisions, and continue moving forward even when I could not see the entire path ahead.

Over the years, Tanika Mann & Associates continued to grow and evolve. I expanded my knowledge, developed new skills, became an Enrolled Agent, and served clients through tax, accounting, bookkeeping, and business-related needs. I have watched God provide, redirect me, correct me, and allow me to grow through every stage of the process.
He has seen every version of me: the young woman who felt lost after high school, the student discovering accounting, the professional learning to navigate corporate America, the entrepreneur trying to build several dreams at once, and the business owner learning how to lead with greater wisdom and intention.

I am continuing to evolve, both personally and professionally. As I move into the next chapter of my work, my desire is to help business owners see their businesses differently—not only as a way to generate income, but as something that can be built with integrity, wisdom, faith, and intention. My path has not been easy, but it has developed me, and I believe every season has prepared me for what is next.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I would say many of my struggles began with experiences from childhood. My parents went through a custody battle, and I ultimately lived with my father. Not having the relationship with my mother that I desired, or another woman consistently present during my adolescent years, weighed heavily on me—especially because many of my friends had close relationships with their mothers and parents.

For a long time, I struggled with low self-esteem and was unable to recognize my own worth. It was not until adulthood that I began to see the value, strength, and potential that had always been within me.

After high school, I also struggled with not knowing which path to take. When I entered the corporate world, I often felt as though I did not belong. I did not see myself as being as polished, professional, or experienced as the people around me. Many of my colleagues had traveled more, had different life experiences, or communicated in ways that seemed more professional, which sometimes made me question whether I truly fit in.

As an entrepreneur, one of my greatest challenges has been learning to accept who I am and understanding that I can still be successful without changing my personality to match someone else’s. I am naturally quieter and more observant, and I am learning that those qualities are strengths. I do not have to follow the same path, possess the same personality, or display the same traits as others in order to reach the level of success God has for me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
My current business is Tanika Mann & Associates, where I provide tax and accounting services. I have been in business since 2021 and primarily serve small businesses, although I also work with a few individual clients. I genuinely enjoy business, so I love helping business owners keep their financial records organized, understand their numbers, and remain compliant with their tax responsibilities.

I am also in the process of evolving my business and preparing to operate under a new name, Kingdom Prosperity Business Consulting. I am still in the planning stages, but this transition reflects how both I and my faith have grown. I will continue offering tax and accounting services, but my focus is shifting toward consulting, compliance, and helping businesses operate more efficiently.

The vision behind Kingdom Prosperity Business Consulting is to help business owners “see again.” By that, I mean helping them recognize that they can build successful businesses according to God’s standards rather than operating from fear, pressure, or the expectations we create for ourselves. I want to help business owners understand that faith and sound business practices can work together.

Through my experience, I have seen many of the areas where businesses struggle, particularly with organization, compliance, financial management, and internal processes. My goal is to combine those experiences with my accounting background, business knowledge, and faith to help business owners build businesses that are compliant, efficient, sustainable, and aligned with their God-given purpose.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I enjoy most is having opportunities to connect with people from different backgrounds. I also appreciate the rich history of the area, the variety of things to do, and the opportunity to experience so many different cultures.

What I dislike is the “dog-eat-dog” mentality that some people have. I believe there is enough room for all of us to succeed, and I would love to see more collaboration, support, and people genuinely helping one another instead of always feeling like they have to compete.
